Peacock this, peacock that... what's the deal?

Man... I've always wondered... why are so many things called peacock? How does...

and this (src)
look like this (src)?

Can someone explain this fascination with peacocks to this non native English speaker? (these have come up in a couple of topics today and curiosity finally killed this cat!)

I see the resemblance....   

Pict A. the stems are 'said' to resemble the shape of the peacock tail.
Pict B. is all about the color
Pict C. is all about fun

It's all an abstract expression to make up a common name we all can pronounce, lol.
