Filter media? Empty Filter media?

Just got a FX5 and dont quite know what media I should get. What do you guys reccomend?

I'd fill it with bio balls. They allow for the higher flow rate and are relatively cheap. Bio rings tend to get pretty clogged in fx5s

I was thinking about posibly using some medium size lava gravel for media. Would it work or would there be any problem with this? Just an idea.

The problem is 2 months in, they'll be caked with debris.
