Attention planted tank keepers...........
Hello everyone,
Its me.. well not "me", its fishnvw, Anthony. Just wanted to let everyone know that the greater seattle aquarium sociaty is having a Tom Barr lecture. That's right the Tom Barr will be at there meeting on sept. 14 2010. Tom Barr is a very well known aquarium plant guru, he has both a forum (the barr report) as well as a meathod the Tom Barr meathod named after him. This guy is up there with Takashi Amano, Oliver Knott, and waldstein. i dont know if there is an auction as a matter of fact i dont know much about it at all. I am not even a member of there club yet, but what I do know is its free, its Tom Barr, and its fish people. Last time I went I had such a great experiance that I changed the date of my boy scout meetings so I can start attending....... So step right up, come one, come all, if you have ever even thought of sticking a plant in your fish tank then be there (and try not to get suckered into buying a shirt unless you want one). Cheers all.
For more information visit the GSAS web site.

Re: Attention planted tank keepers...........
That sounds like fun but I don't have their website...unless its GSAS.com....Nope, just checked. If you would like to share the website with everyone then we (the ones that don't know) could venture on there and find out more. Thanks

Yes there is going to be a "mini auction", I went to the Ad Konigs lecture and the "mini auction" had like 20 diffrent types of plants, and several fish, as well as some dry goods. Its worth it just to see Tom barr, its also worth it just go to the auction.

Re: Attention planted tank keepers...........
I'm going to bring my daughter along. We're going to see Kataklysm in Seattle tonight and have to drive back, so it'll be a really late night, but I'm going to talk her into spending the next evening surrounded by fish geeks.
We'll be the ones with long hair, probably somewhere in the back corner.
For anyone that hasn't been to a meeting, bring some money and a spare cooler if you have one because you will probably see some plants or fish that you must have. I never leave home without my fish transporting cooler!

Thanks for the tip man! just any ol' cooler will do?
also Ratatat plays on tuesday i might go
Re: Attention planted tank keepers...........
Yeah, any ol' cooler. If you don't have far to drive, you probably won't even need that. I just like to load my bags of fish into the cooler for the insulation and safekeeping. I actually strap them in with the seat belt too.

If anyones interested in a water sprite plant, i just uprooted the biggest one in my tank, its easily over 7 inches. looking for trade for any other undemanding plants, but looking for a nice foreground plant or dwarf sag

Re: Attention planted tank keepers...........
Yes they are bagged.
Maybe I just go overboard with mine? I always transport them in a cooler, I've been doing it that way for years.
Forget I said anything about the cooler ... ... just bring money in case you want to buy any plants or fish (and take them home the way you normally do.)

Re: Attention planted tank keepers...........
It was a great presentation by Mr. Barr with a nice powerpoint and some Q & A afterwards. The auction was very long but well worth it since the plants were OUTSTANDING! I have never seen an Amazon so big outside of a tank. It was so big it came to the meeting in 2 plastic garbage bags. Also Steve with the cool shrimp from Japan was nice and welcoming to the club. AS a matter of fact everyone was so nice to me that I decided to join and see how much I can learn from everyone.
Yell out if you were there (I'm sure I saw a gray drivers cap sitting in front of me)

I enjoyed the presentation and think I learned that I'm not going to be able to keep any plants alive. What Tom Barr called his low light tank seemed to be brighter than anything I have. I guess I've been trying to grow mine in the dark. No light, no CO2 -- I should have bid on those plastic plants.
Driving back to Tacoma was an absolute nightmare on I-5, with three lanes closed and repaving going on. Two nights in a row now I didn't get back home until approx 2 AM.

You should be able to grow lights, these are the bulbs that i use that i replaced the incandescent bulbs (that yellow tint-ish color) that the hood came with my 10 gallon.
I used the ones on the right (about $6), the corallife kinda suck & were weaker.
I do have eco-complete subtrate though, and have added Excel a few times (but not consistently) but over time the plants should adapt to survive, it just might take a while.
Here is a picture of mine after 9 months

Meeting was awesome. I joined the club but won't get to go back until at least December. Didn't get home till 2am thanks to road construction. Not sure how I'm still going on only 4 hours sleep. My teenager was going to come with me but had to study for a chemistry test. Glad I didn't keep him out till 2am.
I got some plants for my and my son's tank. We'll see how long it takes me to kill them.

Re: Attention planted tank keepers...........
Thanks to Anthony for this thread for which I never would have found GSAS. I signed up that night and I'm happy to report my first discount using my membership card (the Fish Store on Roosevelt in Seattle). Now I have access to all the past videos and newsletters which has been keeping me up all night reading in bed with Southpark season "whatever" playing in the background ( My wife and I go to sleep to Southpark every night, demented? Maybe!) I even had the pleasure to see myself sitting in the audience during the Q&A portion of Tom Barr's presentation-proof to my loving wife that I was there just by clicking the video of Sept. 14th meeting. Pretty neat for a simple guy like me. I was the one sitting in center back row black pants and dark blue button up shirt (my uni from work). Hope to see more of you all at the next meeting Oct 12th. Might be a good chance to make formal introductions to the newbies on our forum (me).
