today i picked up a new filter
an eheim classic, off CL...never seen water before, still in packaging...$30! the guy originally asked 40 then lowered it to 30 before I even had a chance to haggle...
and to think I was tempted by the other new one on CL selling for 100$
now, I have a full line up- a classic, a pro 2, a pro 3 and an ecco.....any eheim cans I left out?

Re: today i picked up a new filter
the 17 is a slightly better filter, but there aren't very many good filters you can pick up for that cheap
craigslist is a wonderful thing

Re: today i picked up a new filter
You lucky duck! congrats on the find! So does that mean you have ALL eheim filters running on all your tanks?
Re: today i picked up a new filter
What classic did you end up with?
The 2217 is pretty good, but I think I read of a mod on the 2215 of putting a 2217 impeller in for more pep/water flow out of the unit. Could be wrong but seems I read that somewhere.

Re: today i picked up a new filter
poke- eheims is all ill run...with the exc eption of a few "for emergency only" HOBs - for quarantines. im also considering a proiject involving a fluidized bed filter and a cubic assload of purigen..but yea...eheims all the way!!
dmd- the -17 is a better filter, I got the 2211 which has a smaller outlet than its inlet...but I cant complain because it was still in its original packaging and what good filter can you get for $30 new? that's right, none! as for modding them, im curious the difference in impellers...im still waiting to get a North American market pro2 so I can compare the 60Hz impeller with the 50Hz one
tomorrow I have to go to storage...ive got an aqua c remora on one of my tanks and the pump is making one hell of a racket...gonna replace it with the eheim ~370 gph pond/sump pump I have laying around

Re: today i picked up a new filter
I would love an Eheim or two on my 210g but those big boys are expensive. I really want one with the built in heater. For now I just dream....

Re: today i picked up a new filter
I just picked up another pro3 on ebay, new for 165...for your size tank depending on bioload youd need 2-3. im a big fan of multiple filters cuz you can clean one out completely and not have to worry about too big a spike in water quality cuz you still have another "untouched" filter. you just alternate maint. cycles.
the people who were selling mine (which I bought one at sierra for about $300) have more than 10 available. you can go with a larger capacity for not much more
as far as heaters, I looked into the hydor inlines, but saw too many reviews of failures...theres an aquatop digital one that likewise looked good, but peoples experiences said otherwise...for now, theres only one heater for me (and no, its not an eheim, though I own one...and an ebo jager, my old favorite) [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
the reason I like these is they are digital, rather than relying on bimetal strips, I like not only the digital readout but also the color coding (changes from blue to green to red if it ever moves from too cold to the setpoint to too hot) so you can know where you are sitting even across the room based on color, or the readout displays actual temp. also will tell you if youre getting insufficient waterflow around the heater. I also like the guard around it to protect the fish (and for my breeding discus I really should have one of these for her sake....cuz sometimes if I trim the sword plants too much she looks to alternate sites for her eggs)

Re: today i picked up a new filter
Ive run the in-line Hydors for years now and zero issues. Their glass tube heater on the other hand was junk.
