Need pike ID

Just bought a Pike from APFP. It was in the tank marked as "belly crawler" but it is not the type. Kevin said it same in as that so I got it for $9.99. Its about 5 1/2" long. I am acclimating it right now so I have not had the chance to research yet.

Any ideas?

I think I might have found it: Crenicichla sveni

The main thing that makes me think this is this quote from the article: "Comments: A frequently encountered species that is exported out of Colombia with C. sp. Belly Crawler. They are often seen in the same tanks in aquarium shops. They are both found in the Rio Meta system but C. sveni is found in the slower waters, while C. sp. Belly Crawler occupies the rapids and fast-flowing streams."

Sveni would make sense, they are caught right along side bellycrawlers.

Hey DMD, I bought one of the same pike a while back, from apfp labeled as lepidota, but they really don't look like lepidota. Mine is female, pink belly on yours makes me think female also.


Man they sure do look like that Sveni in the pic.

The Crenicichla lepidota female is very similar.....

Being that they are both part of the Saxatilis family they are pretty close in appearance.

I will say mine is shy, hows yours?

I have a large red lava rock with a hole in it that I put in the tank so it now has its own cave to escape the other fish. This seems to have made it a little less skittish. It has not eaten yet.... Only been two days and its still settling in.

It'll eat soon, I had 2 and the one that survived was more eager to eat right away. it has a private "Madness style PVC cave" but its in and out a lot.

Got my girl to eat last night. Im saying girl because of the belly coloration coming in. She seems to be settling in just fine and ate live earthworms and some whole frozen krill. Dont have her eating pellets yet. Still kind of a shy fish but she is coming out of her shell. This is my first time with a pike and from everything Ive read this one I have is a good community fish.

From what I have read most pike are pretty aggressive..... but, I am far from a pike expert.... just a fish nerd that reads too much.... she is lovely though, and I usually dont even comment on new world fish. so nice pick up!

I guess a lot of pikes are pretty hard core but the Saxatilis family of pikes are ones that can be easier to fit into a community setting.
