Store bought tank separator
What techniques have you guys used to set one of these up for a snug fit? I just set my first one up and there's a little room for fry to squeeze by on the edges. Does anyone have any tips for anyone else sharing my frustration?

Alot easier to get a 10 gal tank for your fry, unless you know each type of fry will be safe housed with another type. I have 1 10 gal setup with my Demasoni fry and Pseudotropheus Elongatus fry, havent had a problem with them together for 3 weeks.

Poret foam. Pretty much fry-proof. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I've got a 10 and 20 for my fry. I was goin to section my 20 into three sections but now I'm thinking against it. I have a divider in there because the batches of fry in the 20 are about 3-4 weeks apart and they have about a qtr inch on them in size.
Should I have even bothered to separate them?
I just pulled 23 babies from two different mommas. I'm pretty excited

Re: Store bought tank separator
I have a tank with 4 different size peacock fry in it and have no problems, but when my peacocks first started spawning there was a month space in between batches. I had a peacock fry that had a spinal injury and wouldnt of made it, so I tested the water and put him in the tank with the 2 older fry and he was eaten right off the bat. I think the old rule of thumb plays in this, as long as there to big to fit in there mouth then its ok.

The stress of constantly being chased won't case any bad effects?

Re: Store bought tank separator
Back when I used to save fry, I had a different experience than Addicted. If there was more than a couple of weeks difference in age, the older fry would usually kill the newly spit ones.
I started using breeder boxes for the new fry until they had a little growth on them and then would release them without much problem. There were times when I had so many breeder boxes floating around, there was barely room for the fry in the actual tank.
I know some people that use the Poret foam to make dividers (Hamburg Mattenfilter) and that seems to work quite well.

Re: Store bought tank separator
I'm planning to use Mattenfilters when I rebuild my breeder setup in the new house. Put the heater behind the filter and a lift tube, then use a bulkhead overflow and a continuous drip water supply so that I end up with a automatic water change system that'll do as large a water turnover as I want on a tank-by-tank basis. But the Mattenfilter is the magic to the system, as they supposedly only need to be cleaned once every 6 to 12 months.
