I'm not sure you took enough photos of that shrimp... Spot On

I've seen shrimp with this coloration in my tanks from time to time.

Haha well I figured I may as well post every single one of them, as he seemed to be very photogenic (he kept getting closer). I take it the stripe isn't genetic? I have a handful of them in my 55gal that have the stripe.

"He" is a she Wink

And yes, it most likely is genetic, just recessive.

I've heard this can happen when you have accidental crossbreeding. I had a few like this when an RCS jumped into my YCS tank and got busy. Some nice colors in there, but their next generation was all boring brown.

I mean that my true breeding rcs would throw the striped back from time to time with no brown coloration. I've never mixed my neocaridina strains.

Dumb question I know but how do you tell the sex of a shrimp?

Not a dumb question at all!

The easiest way is coloration. Male standard rcs are always at least partially translucent. Male neocaridina in general trend to be less colorful than females, though this is no longer the case with some of the more recent varieties.

Additionally, the tail angles up a bit more in males and the sides of the shrimp shell that extend down under the tail on either side of the pleopods are much longer (taller) on females, perhaps to better protect eggs when the female is carrying.
