red cherry shrimp
I got a dozen of these guys (and girls) at the GSAS auction Saturday. I'm happy to announce that two of the females already have eggs! I didn't think they would settle in so quickly! Deffinatly made my day to see them, I just hope everything keeps going this well!

Re: red cherry shrimp
One thing I learned so far by keeping them is you need a good amount of cover to keep them happy, otherwise you will start loosing 1 per week. I lost 4 before my tank settled in and I started seeing babies popping out. Its a cool sight when they get a little size on them so you can see them.
I originallly started with 6 from Conway Tropical and 6 from Pet Pourri, 1 Tiger pleco and 4 Rabbit snails. Now I also have alot of unknown snails that hitched a ride from plants I bought and I added 4 Singapore shrimp to the tank for some size.

They are in my planted tank with TONS of cover, usually takes me a moment to find them. The only thing I'm worried about is,my filter, I need to put some mesh over inlet. Do you think stainless steel is safe? I can get stainless mesh easily and it has tiny holes.

I use a pre-filter sponge over all my intakes in my tanks, helps alot for holding bacteria.

Ok, I'll track some down. We have jack squat for LFS over here, I'll probably end up ordering some.

Re: red cherry shrimp
My local grocery store has some "bottle scrubbers" in the housewares section that is basically a plastic stick with a round sponge on it. I just rip the stick out and VOILA. 99 cents.

Re: red cherry shrimp
ya bermerton is lacking in the good fish supply stores. u could always ride the ferry for free and drive to burien to a place for pets. probably cheaper then driving the whole way there. just my two cents. also lots of places u could contact in the seattle area. check out the local posts, u may be able to find some good deals within bus range even. (idk if its still free in seattle)

I've been substituting with DIY. I just used tiny zip ties I get from work and slapped a strip of foam around the intake.
As for our lack of pet supply stores, I have dreams of opening one.... someday.

Re: red cherry shrimp
Here in a few months I'm going to be setting up my 29gal to breed Red cherry shrimp as live food for my cichlids. I won't be looking for anything special, just breeders. Anyone know of a LFS that carries them for a decent price in the Seattle Area?

Re: red cherry shrimp
best bet is to buy a decent number of juvies off someone. in stores the shrimp can run 5-10 bucks per. not worth it imo. GL in your choice

Re: red cherry shrimp
Why waist the cash on RCS and just breed Ghost shrimp there cheaper to start off with. RCS on average are $3.50 to $4 ea where gost shrimp are $.25.

Re: red cherry shrimp
I thought about doing the Ghost shrimp, but from what I've been reading RCS are cheaper, bigger and easier for me to see (severely near sighted).
Yeah RCS are more expensive, but if I do it right my original stock won't ever get fed off.

Re: red cherry shrimp
I understand wanting to buy local. I would if there was anything on myside of the water. I just don't have time to drive all over buying my fish stuff.

Re: red cherry shrimp
Well since I'm not breeding them for sale/beauty I could use culls/ugly shrimp as long as they can breed lol

(blueberry's as well) overall they cost a bit more then id like but hey its possible to get em into your petco as well. just a heads up.
