Thank you thou

Re: Flood Light LEDs.
Thoughts; My concern would be the angle of the light. Flood lights are designed to have a wide illumination range but what would be coverage at 1 foot-2feet? Will it be wide enough? I think a 10W would be okay on a smaller aquarium. On my 140 gallon (2 foot deep tank) I'm thinking a 20W pendant would blast to much light into the tank. A 10W would probably reach the bottom okay.BillHN wrote:So.... binbin9 told me to check out led floodlights...

Im thinking that if a aquarium LED strip is something like 20-40W stretched over a 2-4 foot length. The flood light pendant is going to blast all that power in a much smaller area. Now, I could be incorrect. Before purchase I would want to see the light working, and be able to hold the light 1-2 feet off a surface to check out light angle and intensity.
Just my $0.02

With LEDs, 100 watts would be super ultra excessive... DON'T USE A 100 WATT LED FOR YOUR TANK. Unless maybe you have it several feet above the tank.
@BillHN: binbin9 told you to check it out... has HE tried them yet?

Re: Flood Light LEDs.
I'm building up a 10g planted for one of my neighbors. Maybe I'll talk him into trying one of the LED floods on it and we'll see how it goes. Do you think the 10w would be suficient for a 10g or should I look to a 20w?

Has anyone considered combining these?

I'm sure the later could be found for less, though $10 new is pretty cheap. $20 for the lights, then just build a canopy/fascia to house the assembly. Maybe suspend it, maybe make a stand? A 3 bulb fixture over a 10g would be 27w of LED 6500k for under $50 if you did it right.
I realize that's more than the flood light costs for a 30w but, the spotlight would offer more concentrated light I would think.

Re: Flood Light LEDs.
Yes, that DIY grow light is exactly what I was thinking. I'm just going to have to make one and see how it does. Potheads are so cleaver.

Re: Flood Light LEDs.
The 10W can grow low lights plants without problem. 20W you maybe pushing around 2K of lumens. So HC and DHG will grow without any issues. It does create bright spots near the center so I would aquascape with highlight plants near the center of the light. I plan on getting a couple 20W for emersed setups in the winter time.

Re: Flood Light LEDs.
So are the lights in the video 10w? I'm probably picking up a Oceanic 30g cube and getting rid of my 20g long. I was considering a 30w over the 30g, raised up/hanging to try and make the "bright spot" = footprint of the tank. But I feel like a good amount of light would be wasted due to the wide beam angle, which made the multiple spotlight rig look interesting.
BTW: My feelings on the LED spotlights burning out quickly is that it must be something in the power supply in the bulb, probably not the LEDs themselves.
Also, that 72g looks awesome.

Re: Flood Light LEDs.
I think they are 10w (BTW not my tank), but it's one of the videos I found when doing some research on Kessell light alternatives. I'm sure some kind of reflector housing will solve the over spill of light. For the price it won't hurt as much if you screwed up tinkering around with. =)
I have read that on the 20W and 30W models the internal parts are shoddy so you may be weary of that.

I once had a setup lit like this. Eventually I was annoyed by the uneven lighting throughout the tank.

Re: Flood Light LEDs.
Ok, I ordered 3 LED bulbs on eBay. They're 3x 4W 6500K. We'll see what they look like. I spent less than $20 for the bulbs and sockets so even if it's crap it's not expensive. Still...36W of LED on a 20g long should look nice, right?

Re: Flood Light LEDs.
So, I was at my Dad's this weekend and noticed this little guy hanging on the wall in his shop. I borrowed it and will take some comparison photos on my 10g to share. It seems fairly bright, 15w, but the beam angle is so broad I don't know what the intensity will really be like. I know the color temp is wrong, but I'm just curious what this style light looks like on the tank. Updates to come.

Re: Flood Light LEDs.
Ok, so here are my comparison pics of my DIY 52w CFL fixture vs. the 15w LED flood light. I know the color temp is wrong on the LED, but the intensity still lagged. Maybe a cool white LED would be brighter looking? I'd be happier with two of these over my 10g, considering the output I'd rather see the 2 of the 20w 6500k on ebay rather than the 10w. Seeing as that would cost $60, I'd just as soon build my CFL fixture for about $20. I still have the spot light LEDs on the way, we'll see how those perform.
In the photos the light sources are roughly the same height, btw.

Re: Flood Light LEDs.
I got my 3x4w LED lights in today. Pics to come, but preliminary playing tells me it will take more of them than I thought. I'm going to rig all three up on my 10g and take some pics.

Re: Flood Light LEDs.
Here are the photos, in my opinion the camera is doing the LEDs a favor and makes them look brighter than they are. Not bad, honestly if I was going to replace my DIY CFL fixture with DIY LED I'd double it to 6 of these 12w bulbs to make it look "the same", but then I'd be at 72w vs 52w for my CFL fixture.
Costs for 6x 12w bulbs and sockets would be about $40? The other option would be the 2x 20w flood lights, But that would cost $60? DIY CFL was about $25. Thoughts?
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Also worth mentioning is that I believe I found the reason these bulbs are notorious for early failure. I stumbled upon a video online of a guy who took apart one that failed on him and he found there was a lack of thermal paste between components. Before turning these on (other than to make sure they worked) I disassembled them and added thermal paste where it was very obviously lacking. It must be working because the heatsink is quite warm now . We'll see how long they last and if the plants are affected by the change in light. I suspect they will not grow as well with the LED, but I may be wrong.

Is that flame moss I see? Kudos on the aquascaping! I find the smaller tanks are ususually the hardest to scape

Re: Flood Light LEDs.
Wow, that is actually cool! I hope your experience with the "lighting change" goes better than mine. It was like I changed the whole ecosystem or something switching to LED. I did as much research as possible but my whole tank is going through a whole equilibrium balance AGAIN, with different algae and weird bacterial growths (cyno).
