Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
So, I think my Riccia Fluitans in my 15 gallon tank is pearling! I didn't think it was possible for Riccia Fluitans to do that (until I did a google image search on it) . . . not sure how this happened, but it's pretty neat!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Also noticed this little phenomenon happening in my 10 gallon tank. Looks like my Purple Cabomba is making air as well... I filmed this several days ago, and it's still creating those same bubbles to this day. Hrmmm? Is that also considered as pearling? There were several other parts of the plant that was releasing those bubbles (you can kinda see the bubbles in the background towards the right side if you look hard enough). As for the other "single" bubbles that appear once in a while, I'm fairly certain that those are NOT from the plants, but rather just trapped air... but yeah, as for the streams of bubbles, is that pearling?

I don't have a co2 setup in my tanks, so . . . I don't know why my plants would be doing this... ?

Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
Looks like pearling to me. Dont think CO2 has anything to do with pearling, just maybe easier to make it happen. Pearling is going to happen during photosynthesis when & only when no more oxygen can be absorbed by the water. This to me is a sign of very high O2 levels in the water which is a great thing.
Bubbles also can be created under substraight by decaying organic matter but this is not O2. If I remember right this is a form of methane or something...

Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
theChad, oh yes, I'm aware of the gas pockets that can form in the substrate, and that stuff is no bueno in a tank I'm assuming that, that is the case though, hehehe.

Hi PokeSephiroth,
Plenty of light along with nutrients will result in 'pearling'; which is the release of oxygen being generated by the plant during photosynthesis.

the riccia is looking nice and lush. Are you dosing any ferts as well?

Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
binbin9, no ferts...just mineralized topsoil that I got from Gizmo.
Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
BillHN, lolololol, if I can find a way to properly propagate these without making a huge mess, I'll totally give you some!
I remember when I first tied these onto the branches, my tank got SO MESSY... the filter intakes got clogged everyday for like... two weeks. D:

Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
Yeah, stuff doesn't cling on ANYTHING. I used fishing line to tie the cccccraaaaap out of it, and it STILL made a mess! I should have used mesh like those loofa...poofy things people use in showers. But even then, those holes are still a bit too big... XD
Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
I'll give you some mesh haha.
Stuff's actually really cheap, and this one is finer and should do the trick.
I haven't had any luck with my riccia...

Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
BillHN, wait, you HAVE riccia? Where did you get iiiit? I think the Riccia I have is doing well now. It's no longer causing a mess in my tank (until I end up trimming it...which is what I fear the most LOL.)
As for the mesh, I think I'm okay. Thanks though! if anything, I'll just leave whatever I trim, floating on the surface and when THAT grows, I can sell it or use it for trades, or heck...gift it. LOL

Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
I got it from bin, but when I tied it to a surface... it DIED!!!!!
Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
D: ...... which tank did you place it in? Water params? Hrmmm... how much lighting? And do you dose your tank with excel, because that WILL kill your riccia
or rather... "melt it" if you're not dosing too much of the stuff.
Basically if it's a type of moss, or jungle val, it will not do very well with excel (or so I've heard). I don't dose in any of my tanks, so I can't really tell because I've never tested dosing before.

Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
It's been slightly over a month now, since I tied my Riccia Fluitans onto the branches, and this is how it looked like, as of April 20th:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
And then this is how it looked like on May 13th:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
As of now, the latest video I have of my tank shows the latest growth of my Riccia Fluitans, which I posted on the 16th:
Lamental Jester and I have been using the same lights in our 15 gallon tanks, and they seem to be doing great for us. We both have two of them in our tanks.

Not yet, I'm afraid. We don't know who is going to be the moderator, or who to send the pictures to. LOL.
Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
so this is rather open ended...maybe a panel of judges...they would have to decide the judging criteria between them before viewing the photos though...

Seven skittles
...I've hit a snag, my moss is taking longer to grow in cause I took out my DIY co2 since I got the shrimps. The phoenix moss I got in looks all dead brown and such, which is how the first batch I got looked but eventually that got all green and pretty. I'm just now starting to see bits of green pop up in the newer batch. Gonna start lightly dosing with excel to try to speed up the process

Lamental Jester, well after all those extra plants you got from BillHN (that was supposed to go to me. *wink wink*), surely you would've gotten a huge advantage from that. Ehh?
I'll be waitin'.

Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
lol, none of those are going into that tank, I stuck them all into a 20 long I just setup to grow out plant trimmings:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The light fixture cost me $5 at value village, put a couple $4 6500k daylight lightbulbs from QFC in there, plus the sunlight it will be getting being along the window, I figure it'll grow plants quite nicely, might add my DIY co2 as well to it

Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
Yeah, I got a few little HOB filters laying around, I don't use them very often... I'm more of a canister and sponge guy

it's quite the jungle. What's the big Orange stem in the middle? Some kind of Ludwigia?

Hydro Corymbosa 'Stricta' actually, I got it at the auction.... It was getting choked out in the 75 so I moved a stem to the 20 (still a couple stems left in the 75 I'll move too)binbin9 wrote:it's quite the jungle. What's the big Orange stem in the middle? Some kind of Ludwigia?

Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
The video of the bubble stream (not the same as pearling) indicates some cellular damage to the plants` stem. Was that taken right after you did some pruning, by chance?\
Nice pearling on the riccia though. I had some back in the day, no riccia to attempt it now. Let me know if you ever find yourself with some extra.

If the Riccia ends up growing out, I'll see if I can get some for you!

Yes seven, thanks to years of genetic engineering and animal testing, some say I was mad, but they will eat their words when they see my creation: brown and light brown (hey, worked for M&Ms) Mwahahahahahahahaha!

The anticipation of LJ's tank is making me sick. Been following both your widdle tanks & started my own widdle tank project with the help of Bill in a 10 gallon long metal framed tank.

You know Im not sure... I have many starters of background plants. Thinking about picking up trident Java fern. Ive never had much luck with highlight ground covers but plan on trying in this tank. Aquarium coop had a few of these ground covers, for the life of me i dont remember the names. If you have any ground cover starters I would he defiantly interested.

Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
Those clover leaf, lookin plants look like a great ground cover plant
Baby Tears (HC?) is also good, and seems to be doing well in my 20 gallon long, tank.
LJ also has some glosso that he might be able to spare ;-)

Re: Pearling?? Wait...what?! WHAT?!?!
The clover stuff in my 15 is hydrocotyle tripartita. It will grow vertically, but you can push it down against the substrate to encourage carpet style growth. The stuff has grown pretty fast for me, but I was also using DIY co2 for a while. I might be able to trim some for you theChad, not much, but at least something to get started with.
PS- poke, I don't have glosso, I have marsilea minuta, which is mixed in with the hydrocotyle. I was stupid and thought marsilea minuta was glosso at the auction.
