Fresh in from Minnesota
Hello everyone at Washington Fishbox. My wife and I moved here a couple months ago from Minnesota. Since then she rediscovered her love of aquariums and has gotten me hooked as well. We currently have 3 tanks primary (cichlids, community, kribs) and another couple we are using to raise fish food and use as a quarantine. An employee at Blue Sierra in Renton told us about you all and I'm excited to learn from you all as well. When I get some pictures I'll post them. We are currently learning how to properly breed fish (kribs specifically now, though one day we want to breed a pair of electric blue Jack Dempsey's). If any of you have good ideas or places to check out please let me know. Thanks a ton.

Welcome to Washington! Looking forward to the pictures! We all have our favorite stores, stop by the reviews forum to get too much information on the local scoop!

Welcome Fishy Guy and wife!!! The box is a great place to meet other Washington State fishy people, find great deals, read reviews of various stores in and around town, and of course learn all kinds of fishy stuff. Great to have you join us. As for recommendations...you might try reading these threads...those are the local store reviews and then just following along on various threads to see what's happening in and around WAFishBox. Welcome again.

Welcome to the forum! If I remember correctly, breeding EBJD requires one EBJD and one common, else you run the risk of high mortality rates/fragile fish. I never researched it, just what I read from posts on here. Hope to see some pics soon!

Re: Fresh in from Minnesota
yup to breed EBJD you need an EBJD male and a gold gene female (normal coloration pattern but with recessive EBJD pattern) its kind of a pain in the butt to get going tho as the fry are notorious for horrible survival rates and tons of other abnormalities. i think its like a 25% chance to get the fry and then only 25% survive long enough to resell (plus genetic deformities mixed in) really dont mean to burst your bubble here but WELCOME none the less, also pics asap as we all love sharing here lolz.

Welcome fishy guy.
The input regarding the EBJD is some what true. You can not breed 2 EB's, the fry will not survive a month. If you breed an EBJD with a reg Dempsey you will get a small % of EB fry, say around 5-10%. Because you breed the EB with the Dempsey the so called deformities dont happen. To increase the EB fry %, you need to breed the EBJD with a BGJD (blue gene jack Dempsey). This will produce around 50% of the fry to be EB. The BGJD are those fry that are not EB but look like regular Dempseys, but have that EB gene in them. Hence the blue gene jack Dempsey.
As for the fry dieing off because of weak genes, thats not entirely true. Just like a lot of the difficult fish out there, (Ornatum, Festae, Cuban, Black Nasty, Labs, Beani, Bartoni, and Atro) these are all very difficult fish that need lots of fresh clean water and all of them are susceptible to issues at a young age. Survival rate on EBJD fry is no worse than the fish named above.
Here are a couple pics of my EBJD and BGJD. I myself am starting my own breeding project with these fish." />" />" />" />

Re: Fresh in from Minnesota
Thanks for the great welcome everyone. Since we live in Kent we have checked out Blue Sierra (Thanks again tayntdawg) and Midway Pet and have gotten some pretty awesome fish from both places. We are excited to check out the Co-Op in the next couple weeks. I would upload pictures to this post but I do not know anything about how to upload from a third party trick. Computer savvy I am not. Sorry guys.
Anthraxx and Madness: Thanks for the tips on breeding EBDJ. I do have a follow up question for you both though. You guys mentioned using a "gold gene female (normal coloration pattern but with recessive EBJD pattern)" or a "BGJD (blue gene jack Dempsey)" to breed with the EBJD to get better all around results. Are these two the standard JD or a different variant of the JD? Would I have to special request them at an aquarium/fish store? Do they have any different environmental requirments than normal a JD?

Thanks PokeSephiroth for the image tutorial.
This is out 35 Gallon Hexagon. It is a community tanks with neons, hatches, guppies, mollys, swordtails, and a few others I have forgotten.
This our 30 gallon Krib tank. It has 3 kribs (2 of them are mating) and 2 red jewel cichlids. It's pretty awesome.
This is our 75 gallon corner tank. We have a Synsipilum Cichlid, 3 blue guoramis, 3 red ones, a congo tetra (more will be added soon).

Re: Fresh in from Minnesota
No gold gene Dempsey, you need to pair with a blue gene Dempsey. Like I said above which looks like it was pretty confusing If you breed an EBJD with a regular Dempsey, you will get around 5% electric blue fry, the remaining fry will now have that blue gene, so they will be referred as blue gene Dempseys.Fishy Guy wrote:Thanks for the great welcome everyone. If you breed the EBJD with a blue gene, your percentages of getting more EB fry increase to almost 50%.
If you ask your local fish store, I would venture to guess that 95% of them and their employees will look at you and either say "sure" and point you directly towards a regular Dempsey because they have no idea. "Just like they would call a Texas and a Carpintis both Texas Cichlids, or a gold Saum and a Stalsbergi a green terror). They dont know what they are talking about outside of the common fish and name, OR they will look at you with a blank stare and then tell you that they dont exist or that they dont know what that is. I ordered 10 of them from Florida from a gentleman that breeds EBJD for a living. That is where both my EBJD and my BGJD came from.
Once you get up and going and are ready for this project, if I have been able to get some to pair up and have an extra pair, I may sell you one. Understand that the local fish stores are selling the EBJD @ 1.5-2" anywhere from $35-$50. My EBJD are 4", so I would probably sell my EBJD at 4" for around $50, as they get larger obviously the price goes up. The gentleman down in Florida is selling the 3" EBJD for $55, and 3" BGJD for $15. If I get a pair available they will be at a minimum $75.
As for conditions, a steady ph, mine is around 7.4, and frequent water changes (25-30% every 3rd day, small but effective). I would install a UV light on the tank just to be safe (you can buy a 9 watt internal UV that will set inside your tank for $40 or less on EBay, Amazon or at Kensfish.com) ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/9W-UV-Sterilizer-w-Submersible-Pump-Filter-75-gal-Aquarium-Fish-Tank-/261032057498 ). And feed quality food and DO NOT OVER FEED. I feed all of my fish 1 time/ day. My babies get 2-3 /day. I feed my more delicate fish a combination of NLS, Southern Delight, Xtreame, Omega1. And only feed them pellets that they can eat whole. My 4" EBJD get 1.5 - 2mm pellets. You dont want food being expelled from their gills or left uneaten, because it is too big for them to consume fully or to much to eat, because this uneaten food is what helps feed the parasites living in your tank, and when strong, all they need is an opportunity to attack the fish.
Hope this helps you. Any more questions please ask.
