What Kind of Catfish is This??
Still puzzled what kind of catfish this is. Hrmmm... it's currently in my 100 gallon tank, sharing it with a bunch of white clouds, and I'm guessing this catfish will grow up to become big enough to munch of the white clouds, which I don't mind if he does, considering that they were only like 20 cents each. =P
It kinda looks like a young Channel Catfish, but it doesn't have the "fork" fin-shape, like in the drawings I've been looking online. But I'm guessing it doesn't have a fork on its tail fin because it's still young... but who knows?
Maybe it's a Bullhead Catfish?

Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
fishNAbowl: AWESOME!! Well, looks like it still has lots of growing to do. I don't mind if it eats the white clouds =P circle of life, I s'pose.
Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
I wouldnt be suprised if they start dissapearing real soon. My silver tip cat would eat everthing small enough as soon as the lights when out! Cool lookin lil guy. Where did ya get him?

Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
Nick_87: found him in Tiger Lake when we went swimming several months ago, it was under a rock (of all places) and when I got it, it was only about 1 1/2" long, and now it's about 3" long, and definitely has a mouth big enough to eat the white clouds in the tank. I'm pretty sure my white cloud numbers have dropped, because I remember buying about 200 of them in the tank, and now there's about 100 or so in there. Hahahahaha!!
Once it gets bigger, I might just put it in a tank of its own, or eat it. I don't know. =P

Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
He's right that fish will eat everything. You should plan on bigger tankmates if you want to keep him. It's a big tank... Time to upgrade to the big boys

@PokeSephiroth, the fish maybe WC but the meat will get funky being raised in captivity.

Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
Really? I would think the opposite... at least if you feed decent foods
Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
Interesting, yeah I was thinking that it would be better if they were tank raised since they aren't eating mucky water/mud. Alas, if I can't eat it, I will at least enjoy it while it's alive. Maybe cook it up, mash it, and turn it into fish food for the white clouds to enjoy. LOL!!!
Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
Many of the water conditioners used in the hobby specifically say not to be used for fish meant for human consumption. What is the stuff doing to our fish?

Doesn't this just mean the product has not been approved by the FDA for food consumption?DMD123 wrote:Many of the water conditioners used in the hobby specifically say not to be used for fish meant for human consumption. What is the stuff doing to our fish?

Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
I guess I didn't think about some of the chemicals that inevitably get introduced into a home tank... Someone who has a cold-water tank should do an experiment (or when Poke is sick of it, we could just catch a wild catfish of same type and size) to see if wild tastes better...
I know wild-caught salmon and other fish tastes much better than farm-raised, so it makes sense that this might correlate to hobby fish- but then again, we don't feed our fish just to grow as fast as possible like I'm sure farms do.

LuminousAphid: Hahahahaha, I will definitely let you know if and when I get tired of it =P perhaps when I'm down to like 3 White Clouds. =P
Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
I think then, like you said, you should mince him up and feed him back to them! The circle of life will be complete!
Anyway he is pretty cool looking!

Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
LOL!!! Yeah, White Clouds being eaten by a catfish, which will then be fed back to future White Clouds.

Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
DMD123: .......... I hate cichlids though. Living in the Philippines for 5 years during my college years, every filipino fishkeeper is all cichlid this, cichlid that, my flowerhorn has a bigger hump on its head than yours, my arowana (although not a cichlid) is bigger than yours, oh green terror, green terror, parrot fish, blah blah blah.
I'm scarred for life. And I've vowed never to keep any cichlids of considerable size in my tanks, thankyouverymuch =P
And seriously, what is it with Filipinos and their lust for Flowerhorns and Arowanas? I just don't get it!!
I'm Filipino, I don't care for them...
SiRWesDragon: Do you have a fondness for Flowerhorns or Arowanas?

All ...cichlids...that eventually get large. And by large, I mean, anything that isn't a dwarf cichlid. =P
Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
Where did you get so many white clouds? I know World of Wet Pets in OR sells white cloud fry as feeder fish for $.25/each, but haven't seen anyone in WA have cheap ones. I've always wanted to get a 30gal and a breeding group of like 20 white clouds and just let them spawn forever!!!

Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
CrazedAce: Pet Town in Belfair sells em at 5 White Clouds for a dollar because they're "feeder fish".
Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
I had a white cloud that was at least 2 years old, and it was beautiful... I love how under-appreciated these fish are :PThey look awesome when older, and I'm sure even better when they're in a decent school. Mine was the only one of its kind in the tank and lived in completely the wrong temperature its whole life, but it still looked great
edit: I put it outside in a "pond" earlier in the summer so it could get some relief from the tropical temps, and I think it either jumped out or got eaten by cats/racoons

Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
I love white clouds, don't get me wrong. I just wouldn't be as butt hurt, if they were eaten since they're so affordable. If the catfish started eating neon tetras (and even if neon tetras are $1 a pop at Aquarium Co-Op) I would feel really bad, then, and would find a new home for that catfish.
That being said, white clouds are awesome to watch, especially when males start to flare their fins at one another.

Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
Nnnnoooooooo..... Cichlid is a type of fish out of 100's of deferent gene pools. Just like any other species there are small ones & big ones. Just like tetra, barbs, killifish, and everything else. You can find these from 3" to 3 feet, lol!PokeSephiroth wrote:All ...cichlids...that eventually get large. And by large, I mean, anything that isn't a dwarf cichlid. =P
What's cool and what attracts people to cichlids usually is color, and the individual personalities that sets this species apart from all else

Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
I pulled this out of my archive of pictures. It's my only one left of one of the Speckled Bullhead Catfish I have raised. These two fish grew up together & eventually fought for territory. I ended up moving the JD only to have it die a couple days later :(Then eventually re homed the Bullhead to a friend.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
The JD is about 8 inches, the Cat fish about the same. They both picked on each other but in the end it was the JD that got the best of the Cat.

Re: What Kind of Catfish is This??
Does everyone still remember this catfish that I caught a while back? It was only about 2 inches when I got it, and now he is about 10 inches in length! My goodness he has grown! I noticed him acting odd. He usually hides inside a cave, but this time, I caught him hiding in a spawning mop. Hahahaha!!
Peekaboo I see you!! :-)
I'm pretty sure he was "hiding" in there, trying to grab a black neon tetra snack. Hahahaha
