Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
My 1st shrimp tank was a 29 gallon tank. Had to cut it to a 15 gallon tank and now its cut down to a 10 gallon tank.

Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
You're not planning on selling or giving away any of those Neocaridina shrimp, I hope? Yellows, RCS, and Blue Velvets will definitely inter-breed, ruining their coloration. I've read that paracaridina (blue bees) may hybridize with caridina (tigers, CRS, etc.), though this is a much safer bet than mixing same genus/species shrimp with fancy coloration.
If you're doing this on purpose and are already aware of the breeding consequences, then pay me no mind. Just be very careful when selling them or giving them away...

Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
Im aware of it but tigers are all dead. Guess when I had them all in my 1st planted tank. My pea puffers ate them. I only have a few cherrys and yellows left anyways. When all is done my shrimp tank will consist of wild type neo shrimps (brownish) and blue bees.pbmax wrote:You're not planning on selling or giving away any of those Neocaridina shrimp, I hope? Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
I find the wild type neos to be attractive in and of themselves as well. I'm contemplating creating a dumping ground tank for my neo culls, but I'm not quite there yet.
How are the blue bees doing for you? How long have you had them?

Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
2 weeks I think. Some died cause of ph spiked from certain food I tried to feed them.

Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
How high did the PH get? Where did it start out?
My blue bees mostly died off. I started with over 30 early this year and ended up with under 10. I'm not sure how many I have left now - maybe 6, if I'm lucky. My PH is generally fairly high (7., but my water is pretty soft and my general understanding is that it's more the KH and GH that matter, as opposed to the actual PH. Blue bees are supposed to be more tolerant of alkaline water conditions than caridina species... oh well. I hope yours recover and thrive for you!

Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
I wished I had a long and shallow tank that I can divide into multiple small tanks. Would of had different species in each tanks.

Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
I am glad that pbmax mentioned the interbreeding because that was my first thought. Remixing the yellows and reds can be fun, just make sure they don't come back out of your tank into the hobby as cherries.
I had a mixed Cherry & Yellow tank once with my culls and the most amazing colors were thrown. I got tie dye and weird rust colors and shrimp that looked like they were hand painted. It is a very fun experiment.
In the end, one was so extraordinary I gave it to a friend but all the others became live food for an axolotyl because I knew that the mixed up yellow/cherry gene line was not good to release into the hobby via an auction.
Have fun with your experiment!

Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
Only ones I will sell out would be the blue bees. That won't be for a long time since I just got them recently. Im trying to get a smaller tank for the bees to on their own.

Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
What's your thoughts on the dual sponge filters? They work well for you?

Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
Actually 3. The green one is sponge type but changed it to filter floss. They work great. Got them cheap on ebay from east coast. 4 for $10 shipped.

Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
Yes i seen them cheap on ebay also. Just curious on how well they work vs ati hydro filter or something similar. Might have to give them a try. Thx

Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
The cheapies will work as filters just as well as the pricier models. The difference comes down to maintenance, longevity, and features, I think.
I buy Swiss Tropicals 4" cube filters now (have them in 8 of my tanks) - they're easy to clean, provide more filter surface area, and they last forever.

Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
Yes i like the perot cubes. I'm diggin how these suction to the side and take up less floor space. I'm working with 10g tanks.

Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
I keep them in 6 10g tanks. They do take up a bit of room, but I find suction cups and the other stuff that comes along with that style of filter to be a pain. Cube filters lift straight out with little complication - no parts to detach before cleaning, no suction cups that stop suctioning or detach, just simpler to maintain.

Re: my dwarf shrimp tank
Update picture. After breaking the original 10gal dwarf shrimp tank. Here is the new tank with blue velvets(shango's old stock) from Justin (NateDawg's cousin). This pic is 2 weeks old. Will take a current one when I get home tonight with 10 more crystal reds. Blue velvets and crystal reds awesome combo?

Well got 15 crystal reds from Justin (NateDawg's cousin).
So my shrimp stock right now is 15 crystal red shrimps and 10 blue velvet shrimps.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
