Plecos!!!
So far I think I'm off to a good start. I have a queen arabesque, a Colombian zebra, a bristle nose, and a common. They seem to cohabitate well together but I am finding that my ammonia level is pretty high and have done water changes daily for the last four days. Also have a crayfish and a Dempsey with them. Any thoughts?

Re: Plecos!!!
get some prime water conditioner to neutralize the ammonia levels quick. ammonia will kill fish fast.

What are the rest of your water parameters...nitrites, nitrates? Was your tank cycled or is this a new setup?

Re: Plecos!!!
What size tank are you dealing with? What sized fish? A common will need a very large tank....

Prime water... Cool
30g tank ran it with 6 gold fish for almost two weeks before I put the Plecos and Dempsey in.
Going today to get the rest of the testing kits for NITEs and ph

Re: Plecos!!!
you have a pretty small tank for that many fish, I have a ~60 gallon hex tank with a small filter you can buy for $50.

Re: Plecos!!!
I presume all the fish are small fish, just from the store. So you are dealing with 2-3 Inch fish at this point. Is that a good assumption? Or are they larger?
The common pleco really should go. A 30g tank will not be able to house this comfortably at all in the big picture. Just get rid of it now and make life easier. And start saving for a bigger tank for that JD.

Re: Plecos!!!
So ph was good NITEs were good it just the ammonia that is high. Bought and treated with prime.
Zerc I think you live close to my cousin he was telling me about a hex tank earlier in the day, I might be interested in it on Friday, I will shoot you a pm to check its availability.
And yes they are all small except for the JD, he is a little bigger than an iPhone. And I aggree the common will have to go.... Pretty sure I already have a home for him.

Re: Plecos!!!
That JD is already pretty big for a 30g, if it works out with zerc and you can get it into the 60g hex it would be a nice step up for your fish.

Re: Plecos!!!
you have to remember it's not the tank volume that's important it's the floor space so if that hex is not much bigger floor space then the 30 gallon it's not going to do you any good you need a bigger floor plan

Re: Plecos!!!
I was assuming the tank to actually be a 29g which is pretty common with the dimensions of 30 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 18 3/4
The 60g Hex should measure in around 27 1/4 x 24 1/8 x 29 1/2. So you lose a couple inches in length but gain it in width. I think it would be better than the 29g.
Ideally I would recommend at least a 55g, but a 75g would be the best for the JD.

Re: Plecos!!!
Agreed. Not to kill the sell of a nice tank from Zerc, but that Dempsey is going to need floor space to swim not toswim in circles. A 40 breeder is a better tank, or even a 55 reg,
