210g of Ugly fish to show
Finally got around to taking a couple of pics of the 210g and its "ugly" inhabitants. I know it sounds mean but really Oscars are not pretty fish, thats why they have to have a good personality!
These are all just "snap-shots" no real attempt to take good photos.
Tank shot - looks empty still since everyone is still growing and I have not put any of the large wood back in the tank.

Here is the one pretty one out of the bunch, the gold sev. Has a bit more red than expected for a gold...

This Oscar is not the most colorful, but great personality and a good community fish so its a keeper ( Did I mention it was ugly)

Here is his "who you calling ugly?" pose:

Here are both the Oscars together, the more colorful one is growing slooooooooooooowwwwwwww.......
Hard to tell from the photo perspective but the other Oscar is twice his size. (They were both the same size when I got them)

Heres the Flagtail with fiends

Just a small update on all the "ugly" fish.

Normal thing during their growing stage to have the white edge. The big one is about 5 1/2" maybe 6". Still has a long way to go before he is an adult, which at that point the white should fade out.aquaman95 wrote:sweet picture!I cannot believe that oscar kept the white fins

Re: 210g of Ugly fish to show
Thanks!
After the terrible outbreak last year I lost a lot of confidence in my fish keeping abilities...
The Oscars are pretty easy and helped me get that confidence back, so Im looking for other unique South American cichlids to add. Been looking at Hoplarchus psittacus or possibly an eartheater/geo of some type.

Psicattus have been compared to Oscars in terms of growth and the ability to pig out.

No need to call the flagtail ugly because I've seen ugly and he isn't it.

The flagtail is quite the looker. It has a lot of color in the fins. So its not ugly but lives with ugly tankmates.

Re: 210g of Ugly fish to show
i love that tank so far. perhaps try varrying the oscars diet to encourage some growth. frozen foods like beefheart or something with a similar high protein content could do some wonders in terms of size. also some of the random pellet varieties could encourage some stellar colors. i personally prefer the hikari discus formula for anything that needs a higher protein content. the fish seem to prefer its softer pellet quality, and i sure enjoy those super vibrant colors (used it on peacocks as well as all my tangs and fry) just my thoughts on the matter. either way youve got quite a nice looking tank. have you ever considered adding some plants? something with a hearty root stem to deal w/ those oscars lol.

Re: 210g of Ugly fish to show
Thanks Anthraxx,
The one O is a runt, he has barely grown compared to the other. I have a mix of Omega One pellet types going along with some frozen treats but the big O is just not super colorful like the smaller one. Plants (Live) are something I would consider but with 6 silver dollars and the flagtail they would not make it. I will probably add one of my large wood pieces back in soon to fill the big empty area.

Re: 210g of Ugly fish to show
This is the first time Ive kept a severum, always felt they were too common of a fish, kind of like Oscars. Have to say he has a great personality and gets along with everyone. This time around I did not choose very many uncommon fish besides the flagtail. Will do some shopping this weekend and see if I find anything interesting to add maybe even uncommon, who knows.

I like that flagtail!
It's good to see that you were able to get rid of that mystery disease that did so much damage and that you didn't give up the hobby. I think we all go through something like that sooner or later and it sucks when it happens!

Re: 210g of Ugly fish to show
Kevin said it came in as a "belly crawler" but its actually a Crenicichla sveni
Had a little time to research it and found these guys commonly get mixed in with belly crawler shipments. I found they are more on the medium size for a pike and get only about 8-10".
Its starting to settle in but has not ate yet. The parrot is a little monster and started eating already. I will have to get some pics up of it.

Re: 210g of Ugly fish to show
It was great to see your tanks and M's tanks today Anthraxx. They and the fish in them look great. Love the 125 with malawis and the simplistic 56g column Amazonian tank with the rams and discus.
Thanks for the tetras. They should do fine here with mine.!

Re: 210g of Ugly fish to show
Got through with some changing of the tank decor and I added one of my large branches back into the tank.

Here is the new True Parrot (Hoplarchus psittacus), very bad picture but at least you see its NOT a blood parrot!

The parrot is still showing juvi color pattern. These guys are very pretty when they grow up. This is what I hope to get....

Re: 210g of Ugly fish to show
Thanks, with the SA theme the angel was a natural choice. I had been thinking about it for a while but debated if it could hold its own in a tank of large fish. When Anthraxx offered me the angel I decide to try it out since it was a larger sized fish. My fish leave it alone and its doing fine. A great addition. Thanks for the fish Anthraxx!
