Built-in Overflow Empty Built-in Overflow

Post  TerenceH 2011-05-11, 10:58

I just purchased a 110 tank with a built in overflow. It has what I think to be all the plumbing. I would like to connect this to my fluval 405. Is this possible? If so how would I do it? This is for africans. Please keep in mind that I am fairly new to the world of fish keeping so make this very simple. Smile I know NOTHING about overflows.

Do the overflows have bulkheads already installed ?? If so just run to lowes or home depot and get the right adapters to go from the bulkhead to the hoses for your 405. Will help if you bring one of the hoses with you, and even better if the tank isn't setup yet maybe grab a bulkhead off of it and bring that too. That way you know exactly what you're working with. If you use screw together fittings make sure you grab the tape to use for those fitting and if you're glueing make sure you grab that. If you glue make sure you wait 24-48 hours before adding water, you don't want the chemicals mixed in your water.

I am not sure what you mean by bulkheads but there is pipes already attached to the tank. The fittings are already attached and they seem to be glued in.

My tank used 3/4" sprinkler fittings and 5/8" pond hose that was slipped onto the aqua-stop valve (with the lock nuts) removed. The fluval hose doesn't seal to smooth fittings... trust me...

I may end up selling my fluval and getting a larger filter as the fluval is only 100 gals. Yes, I will have to figure out this overflow thing so I can break down and sell the 54 gal.

If I were you just keep the Fluval and add another filter to the tank. You can never have enough filtration..lol being you already have the overflows you could add a sump and that would give you more than enough filtration. Just google how sumps work and even keep an eye on craigslist and you can usually find one.

I would keep the fluval however it is acyrlic and closed in. This is why I was trying to connect into the existing overflow plumbing.

I have my fx5 hose come over the top into my acrylic, I use the regular tank clips for the hose and clip it on the edge of the opening, looks funny but will buy you time.

If you can post up some pics of what the plumbing looks like on your tank I could give you a better idea of what you need to pick up to get your Fluval up and running on that tank.

Here are the best pics I could get. Does bulkhead mean the supply lines?

here is a pict of a bulk head hooked up to pvc plumbing that is ran under my tank there are 2 bulk heads there one for the drain in the overflow and one for the return so depending on how yours looks you can hook your fluval into there, just use barbs like i did (one with the clear tubing screws right into the bulkhead) [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I agree with icer, i'd do the same thing he did.. That was pretty much exactly what i was going to tell you to do after i saw what you had to work with.
