New 90 gal FOWLR set up
I am picking up a 90 gal tank this weekend and setting it up as a FOWLR tank. Actually there may be some soft coral like mushrooms and leathers if the fish don’t eat them. And a couple Anemone's
It will take a while to get it set up since I am going to paint the stand and I have to move another tank that is in the place I am going to put the 90.
Currently my fish selection is a
1 Sebae Clown (She is currently in my 54 gal tank)
1 Powder Brown Tang
1 Red Tail Triggerfish
3 Neon Blue Damselfish
1 Dwarf Angel Fish of some kind
1 Sand sifting Goby of some kind.
And of course a clean-up crew. Snails and crabs, mini brittle stars and limpets.
I will post progress pics.

Well I picked up the 90 gal tank, stand, light, sump, skimmer, rock and other equipment today. The stand is getting painted black before it gets set up.

Re: New 90 gal FOWLR set up
I am actaully taking down my 34 gal Red Sea Max and putting this one in its place. So, in the near future, the 34 will be up for sale. Its the same as this one, only a couple years old

Are you planning on putting what is in the 34g into the 90g, if so I have some thoughts that will make the process much easier,

Re: New 90 gal FOWLR set up
Actually, no.....I will have to move the 34 first to put the 90 in place, but I have room in the 75 for the pair of clowns and the goby and room in the 54 for the tailspot blenny and the black strip chromis. Once the new tank is set up my sebae clown in the 54 will be going into it. After it has cycled. I will be leaving the 34 up and running untill the 90 is ready just because I dont have anyplace for my RBTA until the 90 is ready. So I have time to move everyone around.

Re: New 90 gal FOWLR set up
Well I got my 35 gal RSM moved today. The black clown fish have been acclimated to the 75 gal tank. So far there is no problem between them and the orange clowns.
The stand and tank are painted and ready to set up. I need to clean the sump and the inside of the tank before setting it up.
Here it is.

Plan is to have the stand and sump set up by the end of the week. I want to set the tank on it this next weekend, put the sand in and start filling it with water.

I will have to get you a picture of my family room. I have two more tanks in that room. The couch is a lazy-boy recliner and I recline in it when I sit in it and it reclines to the point where the tank is right over my head and I can see the whole thing. Just to the left and in front of the couch is the 75 gal and in front of the couch about 12 feet is the 54 gal. So I can see them all!

Re: New 90 gal FOWLR set up
I'm excited. I will have it almost full tonight. I dont want to fill it all the way, cuase I am going to be moving rock around and dont want to be spashing water over the edge. When I get the rock set and stable I will fill it to the top and hook up the plumbing and sump.

Re: New 90 gal FOWLR set up
How are you planning the rockscape, just laying them on each other or drilling and putting rods in, glueing. Just curious
It doesn't matter the water level anytime we move the rocks we all get WET

Re: New 90 gal FOWLR set up
I know I will get wet. When it comes to me and water, I get WET! I cant even wash my coffee cup out without getting soaked. I was actually hoping to not get the carpet wet.
I have epoxy that I will be epoxying some of the rocks together, but not all of them. I want to be able to pick them up and take them out if I ever need to.

Re: New 90 gal FOWLR set up
The more I think about it, the more I think I'll do a FOWLR tank for the 75. I want some fish that are not reef safe and would hate to just make my corals a buffet..lol
Re: New 90 gal FOWLR set up
A lot of your NON reef safe fish will not eat leather corals or mushrooms and such. Most of them are charactorized as non reef save because they eat stoney polyped corals or small polyps/zoanthids and then some because they eat invertabrates too. Check them all out. I am going to try to put some of my soft coral, mushrooms and my sea whip in the 90.

Re: New 90 gal FOWLR set up
I have a lot of polyps/zoos in my 25..but the 75..I may just do shrooms and leathers along with some non-reef-safe fish.
Re: New 90 gal FOWLR set up
Okay, so I have the rock where I want it.
I am setting up the sump and plumbing this weekend and should have it running by sunday night. Got plans out of the house saturday morning, so I wont get started till late.
It definately looks better in person. The rock in the center is 18" long 12" tall and 6" wide and weights 30lbs. Its a piece of Tonga Branch. Really nice looking rock in person.

Re: New 90 gal FOWLR set up
Its going to be a while before there is fish in it. I want to make sure the cycle is done first. Tossed a piece of raw shrimp in last night along with a sponge filter from my reef tank.
I'll keep doing water tests for a while and make sure the water is stable first.

Re: New 90 gal FOWLR set up
Thanks all. It took me a couple three days to get it like this. It will probably get changed just a little. The single rock sitting just to the left of middle will be replaced with my squamosa clam. He is getting too big for the 75. That will free up some room for MORE CORAL

Re: New 90 gal FOWLR set up
So I added some snails and dwarf blue legged crabs last tuesday. Water parameters are looking good so far.
I got the anemone yesterday. And I have to say, against my better judgement, because I dont know if I can trust the water parameters not to change, I acclimated him to the 90. He was fine last night. He was wandering a little last night so hope I can find him when I get home. I will keep an eye on the water parameters and him, make sure I dont see any changes or stress in him.

What type of anemone did you get, or did you just move it from another tank, Sorry if I missed it in an earlier post

Re: New 90 gal FOWLR set up
Essentially moved it from someone elses tank. It is a green bubble tip, supposedly that morphed. It has really tiny pink tips. I posted pics in the "anemone" forum.
It actually looked healthier in the tank last night that it does in the pics

Re: New 90 gal FOWLR set up
Hes doing good considering.
I woke up sunday morning to find he had shape shifted himself thru the slots in the side of the power head and was getting chewed up by the impeller. I unplugged it and took the power head apart. He was in the front cover, so I set him and the cover on some rocks out of the flow and he slowly pulled himself out of it. About a third of him was chewed up. Luckily not his mouth or his foot. He found a spot sunday night and settled in it. He is pretty much healed up already. I added a few drops of iodine to the tank. Maybe it helped, maybe it didnt, but it didnt hurt. Anyway, that drama is overwith for now. I hate it when they do that.

oh this is beautiful! I love how detailed your post were and how you added pictures. I plan on setting up a larger and would like to see if I can find one cheap on CL and fix it up. Cant build no stand myself, but painting or sanding etc wouldn't be to hard for me
