Water is crystal clear, you can read a book through 4 feet of water.

Thanks.
It is a DIY canister filter. 4 gallon capacity with Mag 7 pump. 3 layers of filter media, 1-coarse sponge, 2-lava pumice (1/2 inch in size) and the last is very fine sponge.
Through all this filter media I have about 550 gallons/hour of water flow.

Beautiful Tank!
That's what I hope my planted tank will look like one day.
Very nice.
How'd you make your filter?

Why lava pumice over the plastic bio balls?? or just trying to keep it all natural? either way it seems to be working.

I use lava pumice because it it cheaper and highly porous. More beneficial bacteria can live in it and do their job.

Re: My 55g tank
what did you use as the canister body.. I once tried a 5 gallon bucket and got a metal fiting and threaded it into the bucket at the bottom and one in the middle of the lid and sealed both of them but it had problems with it holding water.. Had a snap on lid that had a rubber gasket like a canister does but i always had problems blowing of the lid or leaking at the fitting at the bottom...
