Finally! Trimac Introduction
Well, I've been "patiently" waiting for this introduction since I picked the female up from Madness back in June. So after 4 weeks of quarantine, and almost a week together but divided, I pulled the divider today. It's a little soon but I just couldn't help myself. I'm watching closely and I'm ready to throw it back in if necessary.
Both are about even in length, just shy of seven inches. You can't really tell in the video but she is WAY chunkier than he is. He's had her pinned in that pot ever since I pulled the divider. I'm actually worried that when she finally gets the courage to come out, she's going to whip him. We shall see.
It's been a long time since I spawned an amph species - it always amazes how brutal amphilophus love can be. It's truly a sight to behold.

Wow...that is one beautiful male. I don't know much about the bigger fish but the spawning cave appears rather small as she seems to almost fill it up. It makes a great hiding place for her though as she can defend it from him but I would worry about what would happen to both of them if he managed to squeeze his way in there. Maybe there wouldn't be enough room for them to really hurt each other. Do they use the cave for the spawning or do they use some other area in the tank, like an out in the open area? Inquiring minds...LOL. Thanks for sharing.

OK, so I figured out how to multi-quote.
Thanks for the responses, and interest, everyone.
And there's the problem - I have a huge "I want list". I need more space!

I know, it's long. I was filming along and was just mesmerized by them. Before I knew it, it was a five minute video... By the way - Do you recognize those java ferns? Those are the ones you gave me five or six months ago. I put all the ones you gave me on that log. I've had to thin it out several times, and they are in three other tanks now as well.fishNAbowl wrote:5 minutes of the same thing and yet couldn't take my eyes off the video, lol! The eyes are intense! That's what first attracted me to trimacs, and they do live up to the hype!dwarfpike wrote:Wow, those eyes ...
It wasn't intended to be a spawning cave. I really was just pulling the divider to see how the interaction would go between them. For right now, that pot is perfect. She fills it up and there isn't much room for him, she can defend it well. He went in once and came shooting out very quickly, she didn't think him being in there with her was very funny. Thanks for pointing this out though - it's clear that I need to put more, and bigger, pots in there. The availability of more, and more suitable, spawning sites might ease things up a bit.cichlid-gal wrote:Wow...that is one beautiful male. Thanks! I got him from James Cavanaugh.
The female is a beaut. If I can get them to get their stuff together, should be some great offspring.

I have to know the song. You might have to get creative, replacing words or something. But I bet I'm not the only one who is curious.
