First time Angel Spawn
I brought a few new angels into my tank last week and my big adult Altum males finally decided to pair up with my other Altum which is a much smaller female that had been in the tank together for the past 6 months. She is less than half his size but the presence of the other new angels along with her just reaching breeding age must have sparked a bond between the two. As soon as I saw them pair up last week I threw in a large breeding slate and low and behold last night they layed 100+ eggs. I put up a barrier to separate them from the rest of the tank and they are tending to their nest. Maybe 10 or so of the eggs have turned white after 24 hours. Will I need to remove these to stop the spread of fungus? Anything I should know going into this. Should I risk the parents eating the babies or strip them away after they hatch. How long till they hatch? Wish me luck!

Re: First time Angel Spawn
7 days from laying the eggs you will have free swimming babies and it is best to feed freshly hatched baby brine shrimp. The wiggling entices them to eat. Parents will usually remove any bad eggs and there is a chance the parents will eat the first few batches, sometimes any batch depending upon their parenting skills. Good luck!

Re: First time Angel Spawn
Update, eggs have little wiggly tails starting to flop around and i'm sure by morning i'll have a little pile of wrigelers. Should I move them to a new tank now or take the chance leaving them with the parents?

Re: First time Angel Spawn
I would move them if they are wigglers
edit: I only say this from experience (or should I say failed experiences) with breeding GBRs in a community tank.

If you want to keep a good amount of them I'd move them to another tank. Use the same water as the tank they are coming from, a sponge filter or HOB with a sponge over the intake, air stone near them for water circulation as I'd the parents were fanning and a heater.

Update:
Pulled 100+ Wigglers out and put them in my hang on breeder box. I saw mom snacking on a few so I pulled them out. Bad parents! Haha will try and put some pics up tonight!

Unless it's a mess hanging breeder box they will such them out through the sides of the plastic ones. I put knee high panty hose ($.99) around the plastic floating boxes to prevent this from happening. Still allows good water flow. Start those brine shrimp eggs!

Re: First time Angel Spawn
I have them outside the tank in this.....

Along with a big clump of java ferns they were all attached themselves too. I also put some fine mesh on the outflow since these guys are tiny and I had problems even keeping cichlid babies without them escaping through the cracks. All seems well so far. I counted 100+ alive and well.

Re: First time Angel Spawn
Altum spawn? were these Wild Altum? or were you able to find some F1 Altum?
did you record the water data?
while recently there has been some success with Altum spawns.. it is still not all that common.

Those are very nice looking parents! By the way, you enticed me to get one of those style breeder boxes.

Re: First time Angel Spawn
We are now 4-5 days in after hatching. Looks like 95% are still alive but they are all just still flopping around on their sides and cant get off the bottom. I figured by now they would be swimming around looking for food. Maybe I'm just impatient or maybe something's wrong? Anyone that is experienced in angels, is this normal?

Re: First time Angel Spawn
It takes 7 days before they are actually free swimming and even then they will still be awkward at it like a new born deer trying to walk. If by Monday they aren't swimming around then there may be an issue but today(friday) is 7 days so today to Sunday they should be normal little swimming mosquito larva like babies. At night they will still go to one spot, probably the plant, and seem to reattach themselves in clusters or a big group. That as well is normal.

Re: First time Angel Spawn
Of course just as I get impatient and start to worry what do I wake up to this morning? A swarm of free swimmers haha. I think all is going well but it looks like my brine shrimp didn't hatch. How do you guys keep the water temp up in small containers to hatch these things? The Unheated jug sits at 73 degrees in my windowsill . Is this not warm enought? The package is a bit old but it says ideal temp is 85-90 to hatch.

Re: First time Angel Spawn
I just use a desk lamp kept very close with a standard bulb (not the new twisted ones) and leave it on 24/7 with the air pump.

Re: First time Angel Spawn
We always used 2 liter soda bottles in a ten gallon tank, filled with fresh water and tossed a heater in it.

Re: First time Angel Spawn
Update: Most of the babies have not survived. Everything seem to be going well and they seemed to start to eat some powder fry food (since my BBS never hatched) after they were free swimming but a few days later they all seemed to be flopping on their sides on the bottom and then they started to go 1 by 1. I only have a handful left alive. I tested my water to make sure nothing was wrong and everything was 0ppm but the ph was very low around 6. I did a 50% WC last night and now my pair has laid again already. Another 100+ eggs on the back glass of the tank. Only 12 days since the last spawn, wow these guys are getting busy. Guess we will try this again!

Re: First time Angel Spawn
Mine die off that quickly with the powder as well. I just really haven't had much luck unless I used brine shrimp for the first week then I introduce the decapsulated brine shrimp eggs with the bs and then in a few days transition them over to the bs eggs fully for a couple weeks and do the same process from bs eggs to crushed flake. They don't seem to have much drive for non-live foods when born and would rather starve it seems. A cheap desk lamp at Walmart is about $10-20. That combined with your air stone bs hatchery set up should get you some this time around. How did you do the bs exactly? (Ie: container, heat source, hatching solution, egg amount, solution amount)
