I think my Blue Ram learned her lesson!
After trying to nom nom nom one of the cherry shrimp, and nearly choking on one, she hasn't touched another adult cherry shrimp since then. Bwahahaha!!! She would swim up right next to one and won't even nip at it. =P Awesome. I'm sure she's eating the baby shrimp though, which I don't mind. But yeah. Hahahaha....!

Re: I think my Blue Ram learned her lesson!
dwarfpike: It's a female. The picture was taken a while back (4 months ago or so) and the male has really long rays on its dorsal fin.
They had laid eggs before, but they didn't hatch (I'm thinking my male is sterile, because I got them both from petsmart at the time. Never again. lol)
But yeah, that explains why the female doesn't have a red belly, because she had just laid eggs. Maybe her monthly friend was visiting.

Heh, guess I'm not used to the females having the extensions on the wild ones. Silly line breeders.

lol, my Angels love the big cherries.. I feed the culls to them.
it's fun to watch the rams and angels 'hunt' the shrimp.

Lamental Jester: Hahaha, the rams kept chasing away the white clouds whenever they lay eggs. So I took out all the white clouds, and put them in the 100 gallon tank.

Re: I think my Blue Ram learned her lesson!
Too true. I think she definitely learned her lesson. She was determined to get that shrimp in her, she had that shrimp in her mouth for houuuuuuurs... I thought she was going to choke to death, but it's been several months since then, and she's doing great as ever!DMD123 wrote:Well Poke, after the masterful photo editing, the ram's eyes are bigger than its stomach!
(That's her on the far right)

Re: I think my Blue Ram learned her lesson!
Poke, I don't mean to derail your thread, so I hope this doesn't, but what do you think of the rams they sell at petsmart. I almost pulled the trigger on a couple of them the other day but then I remembered it was petsmart so theres probably a reason for them being so cheap.... They were nice though, I wouldn't say in the same ballpark as yours but they were on sale. I'd love your thoughts

Re: I think my Blue Ram learned her lesson!
Lloyd378: You know, the two rams I have, came from PetSmart when they were on sale as well. I think they were selling em for like $2.99 during the sale at the time. Or they might have been $1 each. I forgot lol.
Now with that said, I did some more reading on blue rams and how PetSmart buys them from wholesalers that inject hormones in the rams I improve their colors. By doing this, this usually shorten their lives significantly, usually only being able to live for only several months. I've also heard that the hormones can also cause males to be impotent.
Now I must be really lucky since I've had my rams for over a year now. Now, that doesn't mean that they haven't been injected with hormones, but I can say that I'm happy with them. I'd probably wouldn't buy rams from PetSmart or Petco anymore, now that I know that theirs can be iffy. Do I regret making a purchase at PetSmart? No. Would I do it again? Maybe not. Lol :-)
But yeah, I mean there are other pet shops out there that possibly buy from the same wholesalers for all we know. The best way to get good rams is if you can did them locally bred.
Coincidentally, we just got in about 18 blue rams that have been bred locally :-D
Hope this helped! Hehehe

Re: I think my Blue Ram learned her lesson!
Thanks for the info, I've heard of this practice before, but not with rams..... Yeah, my lfs said they could order me in apistos and rams if I want them, I may check out that lead first before I make the trek up there.
One more quick question are these the rams you posted about in the other thread? They sure look similar, but I'm sure you have far more than two

lloyd378: Hmm... another thread? I don't recall posting them in a different topic, but I could be wrong. lol...
Unless you're talking about the pictures in my 20 gallon long "Walstad" tank, then yes, those are the same rams from back then
