A sad day in the Madness house
Over the past week I have noticed that a lot of my pairs have been having issues. (marital spats) Pairs that have been together for a few years, suddenly the males are turning on the females. Just in the last week I have had to divide 5 of my pairs, and everyone of them have been great together with no issues. I think its the Moon.
Anyway, I went out into the fishroom yesterday and found my WC 15" Costa Rican Blue female Dovii laying in the corner. I quickly removed her and placed her into a quarantine tank. This morning she was dead.
Damn males.
So my male will be flying solo for a while until I am able to find me another WC Coasta Rican Blue female.
Anyone else been dealing with male aggression the past week or so?

Sorry to hear!
She was pretty beat on but I hoped she would pull through. The big guy will probably have a big growth spurt now that he has nothing else to do...

Re: A sad day in the Madness house
I've had the opposite..... I have babies in my umbee tank, and yesterday morning I moved my 6-7" Dovii into a tank that housed my 4-5" Midas from dmd(which I think is a girl) when I got home from work last night, my male Dovii was bobbing up and down and this morning he was dead!

Re: A sad day in the Madness house
ive noticed in my paired discus, the female has been black the past two days. shes been sloughing off her slime coat, so I don't know if theres in spots underneath, I started medicating today just in case.
I recently did a water change, she went black after that, the male is his normal blue+blood red. all other fish in the tank are normal,
not sure whats wrong with my female, I call it "non-specific *****-up-itus" don't know the best treatment
this is not the tank that had the lane mountain sand an a string of mysterious fish deaths. water params couldn't be that bad because up until she ate them, her eggs experienced not much more than a normal mortality rate

Re: A sad day in the Madness house
Its gotta be the moon >< my 5 inch red tailed shark spent yesterday evening randomly spazzing out and hitting the tank hood.....did some scale damage and is back to hiding so I can't find out if she did more damage without stressing her out and the tank parameters are fine...little warmer to treat some other fish but she's been fine

Re: A sad day in the Madness house
she was a great looking dovii and the above information that you just shared makes it even worse!!! once you track down another female, what's your plan for reintroduction of a tankmate? eggcrate or? thinking that your big male could go through an eggcrate like it wasn't even there.

Re: A sad day in the Madness house
honestly I have no idea. Since she's been gone, it's like he's a new person (fish). He is so active and interacts with me the entire time I am out there. its hard to explain he just seems relaxed. When you've had a fish that long you definitely can tell when it's different.

Re: A sad day in the Madness house
Might be time to set up the 300 for him and his new girl....
He would make an excellent wet pet if you want to dedicate a solo tank to him.

In the wild do Dovii stay paired for life?

Re: A sad day in the Madness house
Sad news here everyone. I lost my favorite male gold zebra male a week or so ago...sudden illness not aggression. I'd only had him a year and I was devastated. Cried all day (my daughter said...its a fish...my husband understood). I cannot imagine how I would have felt if I had had him for 3 years Madness...I'm so sorry. I have two other WC zebra gold males but I'm not sure either of them will be able to take the place of my most favorite guy.

Re: A sad day in the Madness house
This is exactly what happened when Big D the Umbee waxed his female a couple weeks ago. He is such a cool/different fish now that I'm leaning against trying another female. I feel you though! It happens so fast that it is really hard to save them most the time.Madness wrote:honestly I have no idea. Since she's been gone, it's like he's a new person (fish). Re: A sad day in the Madness house
I 100% agree that the moon had to be the contributing factor to lead so many fish to act crazy. I also noticed an increased aggression level in my students this week. Must have been a super moon, though, to have so many pair snap...... these are some sad stories all around this post.

Re: A sad day in the Madness house
I had a heater malfunction and lost 4 baby gold angel and three moonlight gouramis I had intended to breed. Not aggression but still hard to deal with. Also had a breeding pair of kribs kill a male and this tank is very long. They want the whole damn tank which is odd. I once had the same tank colonized with 10 fish with no problem. Just one of those days.

Re: A sad day in the Madness house
Madness, sorry for your loss!!! I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM!!! My male is just pyscho nuts right now! I had to take him out of the tank, left him our for 3 days, put him back in with my female and fry, put a divider up. He broke through the divider and started fighting with my female again! I get a text from my brother last night "dood they're fighting again"... I'm just glad I have someone home at all times to give me a heads up. Kinda sucks though when your at work and have to try to go home to play fish god...

Sorry for your loss. In fact I did tell you that my large Bifa has been on the rampage this past week in my large tank. Same kind of week here. I have my big female Coatzacoalco in hospital re growing fins and scales. Male just flipped out on her. Nearly lost a hecklii to the same cause and the gold Dovii now have a separator that only the female can get through. All to sudden, non characteristic violence.
Male gold is approach 18" now madness.

Re: A sad day in the Madness house
Yea, they are not that common which is why it will be very difficult to find a female. If you look at my male and compare it with a Nic male, there are several distinct differences, but you cant really see them unless you are looking at them side by side, or you own one type and then see the other type.

Re: A sad day in the Madness house
That might explain it. I try not to look at cichlids too large for my tanks. It's kind of looking at that giant sized TV you know you can't afford.Madness wrote:Yea, they are not that common which is why it will be very difficult to find a female. That's really cool. For the most part, it seems CA keepers don't have the same sense of keeping their cichlids pure that dwarf, westie, and Victorian keepers do from what I've seen on various forums.DMD123 wrote:Ive always appreciated that madness does not mix up his cichlids. Sorry for your loss bro. I had the same thing happen to me last month. Male just went nuts and took out his girl. And just like you explained, male is totally a different fish. He is now super active and always following me around. He never used to do that before. Weird.Madness wrote:honestly I have no idea. Since she's been gone, it's like he's a new person (fish). I mean he already gives a big kiss. LOL When I put my finger up to the glass he tries to attack it, but when I put my face up to the glass he comes up to it and just opens his mouth and puts it on the glass, he doesnt attack or pop at the glass when I do that. I guess you'd have to see it. LOL

Re: A sad day in the Madness house
You will not find the so called named "Gorillas Umbee" as a WC, only as F1 and below. These Umbee were caught by Chris AKA 'UmbeeKing', at which time he spawned them and produced thousands of off spring. Chris is an avid Umbee collector and he gives all of the Umbee he catches a different sub title. They are all just Umbee, but he gives the names like Gorilas, general, to clarify to him which pair they came from, he does have blue and black Umbee. I myself am selling 2" F2 black Umbee, originating from his original WC pair.
If you want WC Rio Mag Umbee, I can order them for you. They will be 7" and will cost you $150 ea plus $30 shipping(which would be half the actual cost). Gage a friend of mine just informed me that he is bringing in 100 of these from Columbia. If you want them I would need $330 up front before I order them. Decide quickly because they are going fast. I will be ordering from him also.
As for Festae, I can get you a WC male and female not necessarily a pair. They also will run you around $100-$150 ea, they are around the 5-7" mark.
Understand that the 2 fish you are seeking are very expensive when purchased as a WC specie. I just sold a 9" male WC festae this morning for $175 and a 5" female for $70.
