Where to buy Dwarf Mbuna Cichlids in WA?
Hey everyone,
I'm new to raising Cichlids and I was wondering where I can buy some Dwarf Mbunas for my 40 gallon tank. I know that Petsmart & Petco may sell them, but I was advised to steer clear of those 2 retail stores since there's a higher probability of the fish being hybrids. So does anyone know some good local stores?
Thanks in advance!

With A Place For Pets moving away from keeping too many of the rare africans. There isn't really any place in western washington who deals specifically with mbuna. If you were to post in this sites marketplace..
" WTB dwarf mbuna, cynotilapia species, demasoni,or saulosi, rusties, and yellow labs"
something to that effect your likely to recieve some kind of response.
If you don't mind a couple hour or so drive. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
These guys have all the different groups I listed earlier. They also ship live fish for 15$ priority to our state.
If it were me I would buy from them or other approved online vendors, but if you want to keep it local ,look in the "rate our fish stores" section,or the "site sponsors section" to get some ideas

what are the dimensions of your tank? If the tank is only 36'' long then only one species will work in your tank, and demasoni will not be one of them. If it's a 48'' long tank like some 40 gallons, then 3 dwarf species will be fine.

It's only 36" long, so I only plan on keeping 1 type of species in it. Any recommendations?

Wouldn't 12 Saulosi's be a tad bit crowded?

Would 2 males and 2 females work? Or 2 males and 4 females?

I stand by my suggestion. 3 males 9 females. saulosi do not get very large. They have proven to be kept in this way by many people. They are usually the 1st mbuna suggested to someone who has a
36'' tank. But 2 males will not work its either 1 or 3,with 3 females per male. That's the tried and true method for keeping saulosi in a breeder box.

This guy keeps saulosi exclusively. He keeps 50+ in a 55gal,and 11 in a 40 breeder box. I doubt 1 more fish would make it crowded, besides mbuna and crowding go hand and hand.
