my dogs are my new heroes
my dogs are officially my new heroes. last night i was watching tv and heard a noise in the other room. i figured it was nothing and kept watching. about 20 mins later i left the room and came back to my dogs sitting on the couch with one of my prized mobas sitting on the couch in front of them. i was really upset. the fish must have jumped through one of the holes on the back of the tank. other than dog slobber the fish was completely dry and had it's mouth wide open. i though he was a goner. i didn't know what to do other than flush it. i couldn't bring myself to do it. i thought it would be in vane but i put the fish back in the tank to see if i could revive it. i held it by the tail and gently started to swing it back an forth in the water. i don't know why but i though maybe i could get water moving around the gills and maybe it would come back to life. i did this for about 10 mins and nothing happened, so i pulled the fish back out of the tank to go flush it. to my surprise the fish started gulping air in my hand. i put the fish back in the tank and held it in my hand until it started struggling to get away. i couldn't believe it. after this i had to go to work and was very worried all night. i went straight to the tank when i got home and to my surprise the fish is alive and well. my dogs will be getting lots of extra treats this week for saving my moba. i didn't think a fish could come back to life after at least 20 mins out of the water. i've never been so happy to be wrong.

Awesome story. I bet my dog would have eaten it if she got there before the cat did.
Keep a close eye on the fish for a few days. I had that happen twice before and with one of the fish, it developed a little bit of fin/tail rot.

thanks for the tip. i will keep an eye on him for that. still can't believe the dogs didn't chew him up at all. they did that to an ob peacock a couple years ago that jumped out of an open top i forgot to close.

Re: my dogs are my new heroes
I have a tendency to leave the top open every once and a while. I've lost $40-$60 fish too because of it. When I converted 1 tank to planted I started experimenting with LED strips. I inadvertently attached 1 strip to the underside of my lid. I'd have to say this was a pretty good idea. When I leave the lid open now I'm staring at a strip of red LEDs. Its a great reminder to close the lids. DOH!

Glad it worked out....I do not think the Bassett would have left a fish for me to find. Is the fish still doing well today?
