Some updates on my Shrimp Breeding
Just an update on my shrimps.
So far I've got 1 Golden bee that just released.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Another Golden bee that berried up. I put in some mosura eros and rich water and that seemed to trigger some pretty good action from the shrimp.
Ive got a blue pearl that is also ready to release. By the look o the eyes in the eggs it should be any day now.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
One of my Fire reds has just pumped some new eggs into her abdomen.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
This is a bad addiction. This is my list so far
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Golden Bees x 16 + a handful of new shrimplets
BLack Crystal SS x 2
Red Crystals x 10
Blue Pearls x 3
Fire Reds x 11
Red Cherries x 10
Cardinals x 6
In the mail...
Blue Bees x 5
Tigers x 10
Neon Yellows x 9
BLue Pearls x 4 different blood line from my other blue pearls to help with the gene pool
Planned Purchases.
Taiwan Bees
sunkist x 2 - had 4, 2 have mysterious disappeared
handful of ghost shrimp that got me started into this whole thing
Now I'm cycling another 15 with ada amazonia for the future arrivals

Re: Some updates on my Shrimp Breeding
I still have a couple of bags of amazonia 1 in one of my bins-o-fish-stuff. Unfortunately I'm totally out of room for new tanks... someday.
I was going to make a long, narrow custom windowsill tank and use amazonia in that, but that idea's been shelved indefinitely.

Re: Some updates on my Shrimp Breeding
I couldnt resist yesterday. I took advantage of the petco $1/gallon sale and got a 20 long.
I divided the tank in half with foam and cut a slit on one end to attach a HOB filter intake. It's cycling now.
I'm using Caribsea inert substrate mixed with a couple of cups of upaqua sand to buffer a bit.
This will be my fire red and yellow neo tank.

Just got my Blue bees, Yellow Neo, and More blue Pearls in the mail! I'm excited but dang it my tank isnt fully cycled yet for the neos. I guess I'll have to keep them with my CRS for a little while

The cell phone photo doesnt do these blue bees justice. Even after being in shipment the color really pops.

Re: Some updates on my Shrimp Breeding
Today my tigers arrived from Bobs tropical.
This is a picture of the 1st shipment. I think it was placed too close to the heat pack so 3 of them died.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Bob was kind enough to replace the 8 that died from the shipment for only the cost of shipping!
I actually just released the replacements into my fluval tank tonight. They look so much happier than the last bunch.

Re: Some updates on my Shrimp Breeding
That filter in your tank is that filter material and peat most with a power head. Can you direct me to a DIY page or link that explains this or how to build. My new tanks PH is at 6.5. Want to try and get it lower. Thanks

Re: Some updates on my Shrimp Breeding
yeah I use a maxjet power head its like $14 bucks. Filter floss, carbon, filter floss, peat (if you want to lower the PH) and a sponge to cap it.
This combination clears up any cloudy tank within hrs!!!

I thought this baby came from my Golden Bees, but I guess it was a fire red baby that somehow hitched hike into the tank. It's about 2 weeks old

Re: Some updates on my Shrimp Breeding
yeah me too =). I think they are beautiful shrimp and there's something enticing about the challenge of breeding them that it makes it fun. Kinda like a perfect golf swing. It's frustrating to screw up but very satisfying when you finally get that perfect drive.
A couple more shots.

Re: Some updates on my Shrimp Breeding
Fantastic How many shrimp tanks do you have now? I'm adding a new 10g as soon as this weekend I think. It's all fishbox's fault
I believe CRS and tigers can cross - are you going to keep them together long term?

Re: Some updates on my Shrimp Breeding
Excellent. I try to limit myself to tanks that I can move without totally breaking down - 29g is my largest.
I keep shrimp in 8 of my 10 tanks right now. One 20 with fish doesn't have any since I moved the yellows out a couple of weeks back (I'm going to add RCS for cleanup this weekend I think) and I don't keep them in my dwarf cajun 10g - with that many crays the RCS were losing an alarming number of limbs .

Re: Some updates on my Shrimp Breeding
I keep my signature up to date with what I've got.
I have 4 tanks with RCS in them, 1 with yellows and blue bees, 2 with malawa, 1 with blue velvets.
I kind of want to put a different species of shrimp in my great-room 20g where I have celestial pearl danios and h. formosa, but after what they did to my yellow shrimp population (ate all the babies) I'm a little wary. So I'll probably dump a number of larger RCS in there. Shrimp are critical cleaners and far more effective than snails; I can't imagine a tank without them.
I keep the boring stuff (except for the blue velvets), you keep the exciting stuff

Re: Some updates on my Shrimp Breeding
Looks like I have baby shrimps in all of my tanks at the moment. I'm pretty thrilled about that. =)
The big CBS gave birth. Looks like who ever the dad was he was a CRS because I have babies of both colors.
The yellow NEOs have a few babies,
the red fires has a big batch that just hatched and 3 more berried females,
the golden batch there's only a couple left for whatever reason. They did not do so well
The Blue Bees I bought about a month ago has a few babies that came out of no where and are living in the taiwan tank
Jesse's Blue Velvets - There's a nicely berried female in the tank
You can see a couple of brand new babies right on the leaf.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
here's one of the crystal reds that came out of the Crystal black mom.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Fire red baby - pretty dull when they're young
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Check out this guy, it's called a blue Dream. Kinda like a carbon rili except really blue!

Congrats!! Sounds like you're doing everything right so far I have 2 berried yellows, 3 (I think; at least 2) berried blue bees, and 2 berried Blue Velvets, apart from my army of RCS.
Great photos too - keep them coming.

Re: Some updates on my Shrimp Breeding
Yup, I didn't do my research on size until I received my blue bees. Woopsie But yes, they're pretty shrimp. I have 2 that aren't doing so well (bodies turning white) out of the 32 I received, but so far the others are fine.
The shrimp should love the riccia.

If you have shrimp I recommend getting some indian almond leaves. The babies love it. There's atleast 8 babies just munching away on this rotting leaf.

Re: Some updates on my Shrimp Breeding
just a couple of photo updates.
Some of the babies from my CBS mom are getting a bit bigger and there's quite a variety. She apparently has some golden bee, CBS and CRS genes. (Well atleaast the babies do).
These two little ones next to the BKK are siblings.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
How about a piggy back ride?
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
my big fat rili momma
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I ripped out my fluval substrate and this is what I've been putting together. UGF, on the pipe I drilled a bunch of holes and then a sponge over the holes. I topped it with eco complete and ammazonia
The purpose is to create a biological filter factory that should be very beneficial for the shrimplets.

Re: Some updates on my Shrimp Breeding
So sad I found big berried Golden Bee Dead the other day. Not sure what happened but sometimes it happens and it's always a sinking feeling and then multiplied when you see her with eggs.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I've seen some folks with success in artificially hatching eggs so I proceeded with a little dissecting. By the time she made it on my operating table, she kinda smelled like rotting shrimp. PE[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I managed to removed the eggs still attaching to the fans found under the belly and left them in a net near the bubbles of my sponge filter. I had high hopes until the next morning I noticed that they had all been eaten!!
I should've covered them somehow. sigh.... you live and you learn.

Re: Some updates on my Shrimp Breeding
Ugh, that sucks. This happened to one of my big blue velvet females a couple of weeks ago... not fun.
I tried to "incubate" eggs from a deceased CPO female in a tea strainer a while back and had the same problem - likely the snails got them, but could have been shrimp. It's doable but very difficult from what I've read.
I hope the rest thrive for you!
