Re: Pet Pourri going out of business
I think the internet stores like fostersmith, big als online, petsolutions that offer free ship/no sales tax is killing local stores. I wouldn't even do merchandise myself....shipping kills.
I'd like to stop by to see if it's a lie....

Re: Pet Pourri going out of business
Gah I was gonna get more puffers when we moved And I wish I could teleport over to my parents house to get some stuff. God knows I would rather make the two hour drive to go there than support my "local" pet store.

Re: Pet Pourri going out of business
well at least theres a place for pets still. only ever made it up there one time, great store w/ lots of lovely fish. it really is too bad that petco/petsmart are putting these mom and pop stores outta business.. but its walmart all over again. only way to stop it is to not support it.

Re: Pet Pourri going out of business
Note on the Door said they are retiring... Right now they have all fish under $20 for 30% off. They are retiring and selling off their stock. Hate to see it, but wish them luck.. Thanks for supporting my habit the last few years.
Re: Pet Pourri going out of business
Went there... they were selling allot of tanks for like 30-40 bucks with everything, heater, filter, gravel, lights... ready for fish.... and african cichlids were like 50% off... some 30%

Re: Pet Pourri going out of business
IMO wage cost is what killed them. Have you ever been in there, where 3 girls aren't standing upfront with max of 1 of them helping a customer. Plus another employee in the fish room. $40 an hour was walking out of that place. On top of that they had insane rent. The going rent on the space they gave up already is $3200 a month.
With rent being near 7k a month and employee wages another 8k a month. You have to sell 30k in goods a month to break even on that space.
Also for dog/cat food etc, it's the grocery stores that are killing the mom and pop stores. They run at a 20% markup. For every $100 you invest in bags of food, you'll only make $120 back. This won't cover the cost of the rent to store the bags let alone paying someone to sell it.

Re: Pet Pourri going out of business
I was there today, talked to clark, he said also the internet sales with free ship/no sales tax is also killing the store business, Been running the place for 26yrs. Insurance, payroll tax and rent are the 3 big killers..
Most are 30% off, some excluded are cat/dog food, and frozen fish food.
they reduced from 3 units to two last fall.

Re: Pet Pourri going out of business
internet sales are hard to beat because A. the companies buy in larger quantities where bulk deals are available, and B. they can blow out lose leaders to get a minimum purchase (to qualify for free shipping). just my opinion on the matter, as always it sucks to see a good store go but most of the profit for a pet store comes from those tiny rats that pass for dogs.

Re: Pet Pourri going out of business
main reason I don't do dry goods. I can't compete with the big boys. However I just stick with fishes where most places do not stock.
these large companies get very good deal in shipping.

Re: Pet Pourri going out of business
see now goblue thats a good business plan but at the same time a bad one. as you know (from that lecture) you really can only sell fish the market will bear... and unfortunately african cichlids seem to be on the downslope. however salt seems to be jumping back so its good that you branched out that way. as for dry goods ive seen some screaming deals on pellets where its literally 20% of what i see stores charge, clearly a loss leader type situation that many places cant really deal with.

Re: Pet Pourri going out of business
I am selling fishes pretty good in season locally here, better than what I had back in Michigan. Used to be 80% sales coming from out of state, I had close access to FEDEX ground facility and pass by the airport daily to work.
Here, the local fedex dropoffs won't take live fish, and the airport is a long drive.
The Borleyi, Moori Dolphins and the Aurora are my top 3 sellers, and soon hopefully my wild Elongatus Chewere group will start producing bunches of fry for fall.
Yes, saltwater is in bigger demand. I made 6 saltwater and 1 freshwater orders since March.

Re: Pet Pourri going out of business
yeah ive thought about the dive into saltwater but id want to do a live coral setup something that takes YEARS to season just right.. and well im not exactly patient so thats kept me far from the deep end so to speak. id LOVE some elongatus chewere love those little buggers and their color patterns wont clash with anything i have now.
