So I Got A Stingray
I would just like to share a couple pictures. Already eating some raw market shrimp. And swimming around alot.
I also noticed this guy likes to climb the wall so to speak. Anyway enjoy a couple pics.
Yes still cellphone pics. My laptop cord is jacked up so I can't upload any actual cera shots till I get a new one or a new laptop.

Gotta check Bobby out. When he posts his list of fish he is going to be getting you have to be fast. He had 24 of them I think and they where gone like nothing. He saved one for me though. I wanted two. I'll let you know next go around.

Ah, I see. Yeah the tank I have mine in now is no way going to be it's finale home. Especially if I get another one. It's not the same but the Chinese hillstream loaches look like rays to me. And they stay fairly small. You should check thoughs out. There fun to watch. I had like 4-5 but I haven't seen them in ages.

Re: So I Got A Stingray
If the diameter question was for me I would guesstimate 5-6 inches.
Mopar- I have no clue. If there anything like sharks I'll say female just cause when it climbs the walls I don't see the two tube things (lol). If there not like sharks I have no clue. When it climbs the wall again I'll try to snap a pic and see what the experienced say.
Billie-if I ever get rid of this tank I'll give you a good deal so atleast you can grow one out a little and then Sell it when it gets to big or maybe it can buy you time to upgrade. I'm not making promises though just if I do I'll keep you in mind.

She looks good, one thing I would Recommend is lose the rocks.. That isn't good for her disk, I'd go bare bottom or sand..

Re: So I Got A Stingray
Thanks man. For the gravel heads up. I won't be able to do
it till next day off you think she'll be ok?
I am totaly stoked. I wasn't planning on the pikes but figured I would just grab them anyway. I can say I pretty
content with this tank and it's fish. If anything I'd like to reseach a couple different rays and get one more baby. But I want to try my luck with this one first.
Besides the gravel and a couple stones I used for my pikes to have a hiding spot. Would anyother decor be needed?it's fairly empty but I didn't want my gar and arowana to get all jacked up by bumping into anything.
If I go with sand what color do you think will compliment the tank?

Re: So I Got A Stingray
She should be ok, it's just not good for them to be on that type of bottom, and also any food she doesn't eat is gonna be trapped in the rocks and might mess up your water perams.
As far as the gravel/sand/bare bottom goes, if you go with gravel make sure it's smooth and not rough and sharp, rocks are fine just not loads of them, and whatever color of sand you like will work fine. When you get into high dollar rays like Tigers, Flowers, and Black Rays black sand is best to help keep them nice and black and brings out their patterns.
As far as decor goes when i keep rays i removed all the decor, they swim around every inch of the tank and will rub on everything.. Plus if you have a heater "IN" the tank make sure you have a heater guard on it or they'll burn the rays. It's best to keep them in the sump/wet dry if you have one. Or in line works too, i just have no experience with them.

Ok I have two heaters in that tank. Do they sell heater gaurds? I did read they burn themselves so I told my gf to
keep an eye on that too.

Re: So I Got A Stingray
They do sell them or you can always build one real easy too.. You can cut a piece of PVC and drill a bunch of holes in it and even paint it if you don't want some white piece of PVC in your tank. Then just slip it on the heater. I never had a burned ray but I've seen a few bad ones and they can get pretty bad. You'd think I'd they felt themselves burning they'd move..Lol

They try and save memory and remove all capitals and squiggles and such to save the room for the site. :/ I've seen it happen to numerous posts. It's amazing how much memory a character takes up.
Congrats on the new stingray!
I saw the post about the sand. It's inexpensive but white. Silica sand from Home Depot is 100lbs for 8 bucks. STEAL! It works well in my boyfriends 75 gallon cichlid tank. He has probably 3" in it and didn't use the whole bag of sand. But again it's white. Just an idear. Not sure if the silica sand would be too rough for the ray. Maybe not. The cichlids don't have any problems with it. Good Luck!!

Re: So I Got A Stingray
Thanks for the congrats!! I love the Ray it's awesome!!
Ok so I just did my weekly water changes and vacuming. I pulled the river stones out of the Ray tank. I can't get all the pieces of crud with the vacum though.
I also used that prime stuff for my water treatment. That's crazy that thing is potent. 1 cap full for 50 gallons. I'm used to one cap for ten gallons. Just an update I'm bored.

Haha I don't like the way it looks. All bare and stuff. I'll probably do sand. So far so good though. The Ray is taking fine to talpia fillets and raw shrimp. Doesn't care too much for raw scallops though.

Re: So I Got A Stingray
Glad to hear the ray is doing good and eating good as well..
Yea it takes some time to get used to the whole bare bottom thing. I hated it after i did it, but when it used to take forever to gravel vac my tank and now it takes 5 minutes to find the little buildups in the corners it's much better..lol
Sand is good just make sure if you have canister filters you're gonna have to lift the intakes up, on my FX5's i had to clean the sand out of them weekly due to all the rays stiring the sand up all the time. Plus if you get too fine of sand they'll stir it up bad..

Re: So I Got A Stingray
Yeah. I think it's going to be one of those things that takes time to get used to. The whole bare bottom thing. But I was thinking about that last night while vacuming my cichlid tank, and how much easier it will
be to suck up crud. Heck I can even net it lol. I did that last night after I seen some poop just netted it up lol.
Also I'm glad your watching my thread I know you had a bunch of rays. So if you see me doing something wrong let me know so I don't kill this thing. If I can keep this one happy and healthy. I would like to try my hand at a more expensive Ray. Like the flower Ray or something.
Oh also can I feed them squid? I remember when I was young at seawrold we fed those rays squid. They where salt water though. Anyway just curious.

Re: So I Got A Stingray
No problem.. I had lots of people help me out when i was first getting into rays, without them i'm not sure how many i would have killed off..
Just be ready when you upgrade to different kinds of rays like Flowers, Tigers, and few other species you'll need a HUGE tank.. Like 36-48" wide and 8' long minimum.. That's pretty much the reason i didn't go with Tigers, i love those rays but even with a 30" wide by 8' long tank i was told my tank was too small for them.
As far as the squid goes, if your ray will eat it i say go for it.. I fed mostly Tilapia because it was cheap and all my rays and my aro would eat it.

Re: So I Got A Stingray
Thanks hunter. I'm waiting on a few quotes for some tank sizes and doza's been sending links to different sites with large tanks. I'm hoping to go 96x48x36 just so the arow and gar have Space. But I'll settle for 24-25 tall.
Doza- man I have not been squiring in years. I remember a few years back me and my family
could easily fill the 5 gallon buckets. Plus hooking up multiple lures. That was fun. If you cam still get a decent amount. I'll buy some off you. To eat and for the fish lol. Everybody I talked to around here have all been getting skunked or come back with only a couple.

Re: So I Got A Stingray
Wolf-Keeper ~ It's kind of a drive but Westport, Wa gets tides just right (only a couple of times a year) but you can basically walk out into the water and catch them. It's rediculous. I'll see if I can find the article our local newspaper had this last year about them. I'm not sure how well freezing them would work but you could get a nice small supply if freezing them works and go that route.

That's a link to a local charter boat. There is just a little blurb about night squid fishing. But I can't get access to our newspaper cause you have to pay to read it online. BS.
