Barclaya Starting to Flower!
At least, that's what I think it's doing... I'm not even sure if it IS Barclaya... although that's what hobbyorobsession said, when I posted similar pics of said plant in a Plant ID topic... Neato!

I am not familiar with this plant but that's coOl. You would think it can not be 1 of 2 things. A seEd pod or a flower. Very interesting looking plant though Poke.

Re: Barclaya Starting to Flower!
Thanks fishNAbowl! Yeah I'm also unfamiliar if this will turn into a seed pod or a flower. It sure does look alien though! Hahaha

Re: Barclaya Starting to Flower!
Yeah..... The flower looks..... Interesting. I'm curious how it will look in person. I will make sure to take photos when that happens hehe.
Re: Barclaya Starting to Flower!
So, ever since that first "bud" tried to make it to the water's surface... it kinda just stopped "growing" and it has been submerged ever since... it's odd, because it's only like, an inch away from breaking the water's surface!
Oddly enough, a 2nd "bud" has grown, and is almost around the same height as the first one.. WHATTTT?!?! I swear they're aliens just waiting to hatch.

Re: Barclaya Starting to Flower!
- They do resemble alien pods. I would think twice about falling asleep in the same room .
Kidding aside, nice picture! I can't what to see what is inside. From pictures on the Internet these flowers/seed pods are way different. Maybe they could use a boost of nutrients? Perhaps some sort of comprehensive fertilizer?

Oh man. I get nervous when it comes to dosing ferts in my tanks. I don't dose any ferts in my tanks but I spose I could give it a try. :-)
Re: Barclaya Starting to Flower!
Well Poke, I was just throwing it out there. I don't know for sure ... I bet if you left it alone those pods will eventually open! Your plants look great.

Re: Barclaya Starting to Flower!
I don't want them to open if they're alien pods!!! Hahahahaha :-)
I think I will eventually start dosing ferts since I will be adding co2 (a Legit one. Not the kind I'm using now with the disposable cartridges lol)

Re: Barclaya Starting to Flower!
So, it seems like there is a THIRD seed pod/flowering thing that's starting to grow! The first two pods are STILL fully submerged, and seems to have stopped growing any taller, and doesn't seem like there's any noticeable changes in appearance. I think this plant is going to just keep producing pods, until there's enough to invade the entire house!

Re: Barclaya Starting to Flower!
this is very interesting, it's like one of those 'i found a hidden room in my grandpa's house' threads, but for aquariums... what will be inside? i look forward to finding out
Re: Barclaya Starting to Flower!
So, I looked again, and it turns out that there are FIVE...... yes. FIVE pods on this odd Barclaya plant! UGH... SO WEIRD! I did some research and read that sometimes it can take about 7 weeks for the pods to open up. I guess it's been about 7 weeks since the first one popped up, so... maybe it IS still growing. Hmm...
In theory, this is what the flowers are supposed to look like (not my picture).

Seriously though, good job. From what I remember from my earliest plant articles, this is a tough plant to get to grow.

Thanks for the kind words, dwarfpike!

Here's a video I just shot... I was only able to get 4 out of the 5 flower pod in the video.

Re: Barclaya Starting to Flower!
When/if it does flower Angelo, you should make a point of saving the flower seeds if you can. Possibly you can/or someone can grow new plants from them. This plant does not seem to be readily available and I'm sure others would love to have a shot at growing them (me me...jumping up and down...LOL).

Re: Barclaya Starting to Flower!
So after a few of the "pods" had mysteriously disappeared (it seems like they kinda just fell off from their stalks, and got lost somewhere in my tank)... I was discouraged, and thought that I was doing something wrong... but I noticed that there were newer pods that kept growing, so I continued to observe... After about the 7th or 8th pod, two of them have finally started to open up! It was quite, weird! The first one started to open underwater, it REALLY looked like an alien was going to pop out! It's still slightly unopened but it's one of the few that have developed this far!
The other pod, actually BROKE the water's surface! Not only that, it looks like it is going to flower! The first layer of "petals" have finally opened, and it's exposing the underlying petals. I'm excited!

Re: Barclaya Starting to Flower!
Bwahahahahaha it took me a while to get a good picture of the plant because those fish thought I was going to feed them, so they were swarming around the general area hahahaha
I can't wait to see how the flower looks in full bloom!

Re: Barclaya Starting to Flower!
It's funny, because I love fish and love to garden, but I've never really been into mixing both ( until seeing threat flower bud). And can't wait to see the progression continue
