Do Gold Fish eat plants?
10 year old son brought home 2 Comets from school. I thought it would be cool new level of fish keeping for him. With future plans of an outdoor pond we put them in my community tropical PLANTED tank. Many of the finer leafed plants are looking like they are getting nibbled on...
Internet info is vague. Can I get a definite YES or NO please!
I've been putting off the dig but if these guys are eating plants I gotta get out there.

I believe they will eat plants as well. They are kind of a forager and I know people who have pond fish that never supplement feed, they snack on just bugs and vegetation alone and live somehow.

Yep, definitely plant eaters. A gsas thread a while back had several people chiming in on duckweed being great goldfish food.

Most definitely. We used to throw Anacharis in the pond where we kept the goldfish and koi at the LFS I worked at.

Yes, any variety of goldfish is plant garbage disposal. Got a duckweed infestation? No problem, get yourself a goldfish. Problem solved.

Ugh... I better get to digging then. I have 2 in my show tank and noticing plants getting hammered like when I used to house Crayfish....
Thanks everyone.
