To the point where they literally rip themselves off the starfish bodies. - AND IT'S LOCAL.

This is one way that the starfish can reproduce. Each leg will become a new starfish and grow more legs and the mother starfish will grow it's legs back too. They are just crazy ugly monsters .

Nick_87: Unfortunately, it was mentioned in the video (from the first link) that this disease prevents the legs that have detached to grow new limbs, and also prevents the startfish from growing its detached limb, back. Thus the starfish dies, and the limbs that detach, slowly die off as well.
It's happening.
It's happening.

It's so sad, and the fact that it's really rampant in our waters... is... rather disheartening
I sure hope we can figure out what's causing this odd disease...
I've been following this same topic on a different private forum, and some people have brought up the fukushima incident as one of the possibilities, I doubt it though.. but still... Man... :\

Or the Asarco plant that dumped tons of lead and arsenic into the sound.

The wiki describes the most recent plague and discusses potential causes.

Very interesting. Nice find, pbmax! Man... if it is global warming, then I s'pose that's going to be a tough one to reverse...if possible, at all.

Re: There's a Starfish disease that causes their legs to run away from them.
problem with blaming local issues is that apparently its also prevalent on the east coast. Believe me the asarco plant bugs me as much as the next guy, but i dont think its to blame for this. hopefully some group can try and figure it out. starfish are incredibly important to the ecosystem as a whole.
On a side note: it would be amazing if they could isolate this disease and then introduce it on the great barrier reef. they have a Huge starfish issue there, where the starfish themselves are destroying reefs faster then they can rehabilitate http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-11-06/barrier-reef-under-threat-from-new-starfish-tsunami/5074118
