Re: Plants for cichlid tank?
what type of cichlids? Africans tend to not disturb plants if setup correctly.
Re: Plants for cichlid tank?
i think the only thing that would work is the java ferns. everything else will just get torn up by cichlids.

Re: Plants for cichlid tank?
tropheus, I kno they are grazers, and maybe a front. I ould be edging the plants into like 40lbs of dead rock, like ANCHORED in
Re: Plants for cichlid tank?
In my experience, at Conway Tropical Fish, with our Tropheus dubs, we intentionally move any plants that have algae into the tank. As they're algae eaters, not plant eaters. I have no problems with Tropheus eating plants. They will move them however, so either anchoring them with rocks, or using water column feeders such as java fern, anubias, bolbitus heudolotti etc.
Re: Plants for cichlid tank?
I as actually thinking of trying to get moss to gro on the driftood, ho fast you think that ould get eaten?

Larson you really don't have a W on your keyboard? I thought you were joking! I’m sure someone has an extra keyboard laying around the house, I know I do.

I'm starting a planted tank. I still need to order my plants and hopefully my two 24" All-Glass Versa-Top Twin Tubes will be in on Thursday . If you have questions on which plants would do well in the higher pH ranges, I would contact [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Mary is super nice, and will have all the answers for you.

Re: Plants for cichlid tank?
I have personally met cory, take his advice... Ive seen there tropheus tank, AWESOME!! actually that tank is probably what really made me fall in love with tropheus duboisi. Im gonna disagree with teddy, I dont think they will touch the moss, and like cory said they wont eat your plants, so your good to go! just anchor them down like the plan was, so they dont get moved around and uprooted.

Re: Plants for cichlid tank?
I was thinking this morning, there is one plant I have found that they will eat. Duckweed, which I consider to be a good thing lol.
Re: Plants for cichlid tank?
Cool it will be neat to see how this turns out. ATM my only tank not planted is my african tank.

I personally would recommend not doing a NPT with africans. Even my tropheus dig, and they can dig up hydrogen sulfide pockets that develop in the substrate of a NPT.
Heres a couple pictures from a tank, we intentionally keep cichlids and tons of plants for sale. 99% of people who walk through the door have read that you can't keep cichlids and plants. We try to shatter these myths on a daily basis. I figure if we lead by example, people will discover the truth. Come look at our planted cichlid tanks, then come back months later, and see they're still there and have grown...
This is a couple shots of one of our tanks that has plants for sale. As you can see, they're mostly water column feeders, java bern, bolbitus, anubias, and some crypts. One day I threw some crypts in there, when we got a shipment and ran out of time. Then learned they never touch the crypts either.

And yes... These are red frontosas. We're growing them out to breed.

Re: Plants for cichlid tank?
cory... is the PH low in that tank???? the fronts looked super stressed.. .they dont have that nice black color in there stripes... its like they are scared?? or Are thoughs the pink frontosa hybrid?? maybe if the PH is low, gettin them in a higher PH will darken up there colors? Just noticed in Picture number two... it could be the flash or just a bad pic?? not to smash on your store, I love that place, and I know you guys keep your fish really well

Re: Plants for cichlid tank?
Ph is high enough. It's the type they're are. Sold as "red frontosa" I'm pretty sure they have a pigment disorder. It makes the blues turn into pinks/reds and the blacks arn't as predominate either.
Heres a link to some pictures that are not ours.

reds and blues

It changes alot depending on the substrate also. If i put them on black sand, they'll darken up a bit. Rest assured, we're making them very comfy. We don't want to chance loosing any of them.
