thinking to hard about...
So for the past few days u guys I have been thinking about selling off my African cichlid stock and just breeding dwarf cichlids and get into shrimp. But I love my fish so much they r like my babies so I'm still unsure about what I'm gonna do. :/ breeding is how I'm making money at the moment... But I think I'd rather change over and breed something else. What do u guys think? Am I just over thinking or does it sound like a good idea? Help

Hmm, well if it's your only money maker , I wouldn't sell the breeding stock. Someone more experienced with SA's or Dwarf cichlids will chime in
Re: thinking to hard about...
Easy solution, get another tank! More tanks solve all our problems...except money problems.

More tanks is always the solution! Seriously though, that's what I've been doing. I started breeding community, then to Africans, and now I'm planning on doing dwarfs as well. I sold a lot of fish to make room to keep it under 10 tanks... lol

Re: thinking to hard about...
Thats the thing about fishkeeping, you have way too many species you want to keep so you require different set ups to house them properly. If you have money making breeders, it makes sense to keep them unless what you plan on keeping is a better choice financially.

Agreed, you can keep your 55 and africans. Just get a small shelf if there's room, and just load it with nano tanks.BillHN wrote:nano tanks. nano tanks!!!!!
Do it! More shrimp keepers! We're spreading like wildfire!

Sadly, dwarf cichlids will rarely net you as much money as rift lake cichlids despite the fact of their inherent awesomeness being 1000 times more than those rift tetras.

Re: thinking to hard about...
Dont sell the Africans. For gods sakes you drove all the way from Snohomish to Puyallup to get more. Now selling them. Noooooooooooooo, like what everyone is saying more nano tanks. If you sell the Africans, you gonna regret it. Im into africans, dwarf shrimps, community fishes, angels, and dwarf cichlids (when I get more tanks). I love them all. Especially the Africans. Keep them fishyladdy.

Re: thinking to hard about...
well there's so many african cichlids, from three lakes. You could do something completely different, but still have the african cichlids.
Without knowing what you currently stock.since you don't show any set ups in your signature. Your profile says your favorite fish is Peacocks. Maybe it's time to try some malawi Haps,or Victorian Haps,or Any Large amount of cool Tanganyikan shell dwellers,There's always mbuna too!!! In a 55 there are quite a bit options available to you in terms of african cichlids, they almost all breed prolifically,so you can continue in doing that as well. You can always do a smaller tank for the shrimp I would think. So you don't have to have one or the other.

Re: thinking to hard about...
all of you guys brought up good points but my only issue is i cant fit any more tanks in my room. once i move out of the parents house ill definitely get more tanks but for now ive got 4 in my room and i cants fit any more at all. unless i got ride of my bed... lol
as for what dwarfs i was thinking of a few that i wanted one would be electric blue rams there is someone pretty close to me that has some and they are so pretty spendy but if i get them breeding it would be worth it yes? lol
the others im interested in are Apistogramma commbrae, apistogramma elizabethae, and Apistogramma Staecki. there are probably mre those are just the ones ive seen i like. i love the ones i already have and i want more thats why i was contemplating all of this :/

Well we can only say our opinions but its your choice. I would love to get some of your africans if you're getting rid them. SOME. To replace my late stock that I accidentally cooked

fishylady - are you GSAS member? Next month (Oct 8th) Mike Wise is going to speak about Apistograma's... so that would be right up your alley if your thinking about breeding them.

you can always fit another tank you just have to get creative,... capture some vertical space and stack them.

Re: thinking to hard about...
yep, that's what I just did. See my thread/pic about Strawberry Betta breeding program I just wrote. I stacked three tanks on a wire rack I got for cheap on CR. Sorry don't know how to link to it.hobbyorobsession wrote:you can always fit another tank you just have to get creative,... capture some vertical space and stack them.

Re: thinking to hard about...
That wire metal rack might hold a few 10 gallon tanks, I had one that held two thirty gallon tanks.

Re: thinking to hard about...
If you're going to start stacking 10 gallon tanks you may want something a bit more sturdy than this. I think this is just for a reference but you'll need something a little more stout.Lamental Jester wrote:Something like this maybe?

Re: thinking to hard about...
Mine can hold up to about a 29g but 20L works perfect, so I could have three of those. I think mine was 350 lb. per shelf. There are others like Bill's in the above post that can hold a CRAP load or whatever you put on them.fishyladdy wrote:yeah thats cool would that hold a couple ten gallon though?
What I like about the wire system I have is that they look really nice, are cheap and are really easy to put together.

Re: thinking to hard about...
Just thought i'd also mention that Chuck Rambo (yes that's his name) and expert on all things Cichlid spoke for the GSAS in 2011 and one of his talks was on Dwarf Cichlids which I just downloaded the bit torrent and am watching as we speak. If you are a member you can download the talk too, might give you some more insight on them and the breeding of them.fishyladdy wrote:So for the past few days u guys I have been thinking about selling off my African cichlid stock and just breeding dwarf cichlids and get into shrimp. Well even better is for his main talk on Tuesday it's free to all so you don't have to join, although it's only $15. Also it's just a guess but I bet he will have some amazing Apisto's up for grabs.dwarfpike wrote:Oooooh ... might be time to join, haven't been to a GSAS talk since 2000 ... Re: thinking to hard about...
Building one to your exact specifications is your best bet. Maybe a member with a shop is willing to help for trade of fish. Properly reinforced you can get a lot of tanks on each rack. I would offer to help just for fun but I'm about 3hr away.
