Re: 400 g stock list?
I'd try to get 2 pairs to share the tank. Festae on one side and a parachromis type for the other. Or a Dovii pair, it just kind of sucks to be afraid to put your hand in the tank.

i am leaning toward chilids but my friend re-introduced the idea of sealing the top and cutting a side to make it a ray tank...

Re: 400 g stock list?
Always have been a fan of barracuda, but not sure if any species could fit in that tank. They're awesome though! I think someone on here has one? Like TRD, or bassman ?? I agree with King though on the Bowfins!!
Re: 400 g stock list?
Yeah the tank is just long and not very wide so not much can go in there other than cichlids. (unless we found a way to flip it)

Re: 400 g stock list?
Maybe you guys could fill it with a bunch of rocks and do tons of african cichlids!! That'd be awesome to see! But you guys are probably leaning towards the S. American cichlids?

lol why so sad? Thats what you get for making me a fish nerd. I want all the tanks stocked with things that I like hehehe
I think we weren't wanting to do the africans because they are hard water. I know nothing about cichlids anyways. Better start researching!

Re: 400 g stock list?
If you want a smaller sized native go with Pumpkinseed sunfish... BEAUTIFUL fish and stay a relatively small fish.. I plan on getting some again soon...[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
They dont normally get bigger than 8inches and would love plants and say malaysian driftwood...
I know where to go as well.. Just need a pole power bait and some parasite treatment... JK.. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Yes, pumpkinseeds are very common in Washington. Even more common than their cousin the bluegill. I recently stocked my 7 acre pond with a bunch of bluegills and pumpkinseeds. They are a really beautiful fish, and make a great forage fish for the largemouth bass.

Re: 400 g stock list?
What are the dimensions of the tank? I understand it's 24 inches wide. 8 or 10 ft long? how high? If it was me, I'd make sure I was utilizing the tank. For instance, I wouldnt keep a colony of dwarf africans in there, but maybe I would do a much larger colony of Haps. Also, with that much water, I tend to keep something that doesnt need water doctoring. So if you have 7.0, i'd shy away from africans all together.

The tank is 10ft long. I forget how tall it is.

Re: 400 g stock list?
Ok.... I think the wolf cichlid is not very attractive, although being one of the most aggressive FW fish out there, pretty cool to watch..... Posted some pictures of the fish you were considering... and one of a lake tang tank... I LOVE LAKE TANGANYIKA!

My neighbors lake is full of them! Pretty much all the body of waters that have a lot of vegetation should have pumpkinseeds, bluegill, crappie, or rock bass. Some more than others, of course.

Re: 400 g stock list?
The only bad thing with Dovi, Umbie and other super aggressive fish is you end up with one fish or a pair and that's it.. But some people like that.

Re: 400 g stock list?
Then get one Awesome Male Umbie, I have seen them live with other big cichlids. If you like cichlids, You can get a bunch of cool Parachromis Types that don't get as big as the Dovii like a Jaguar, Red Tiger Motaguensis, Fedlichstalli, Losellie. All these fish are super awesome looking, they are pretty aggissivie, and can all live together. Other C/A Cichlids look cool are the Carpintis, Islatham, Lysoni, Red Devil Types ( bunch of different kinds of Amp.'s) there are so many good one it's hard to say what I even do if I had to re-stock. All these fish can live together most of them wont get over 15", perfect for a 2' wide tank!

Re: 400 g stock list?
i think if you stick with all males you will be fine. putting a female festae in with a bunch of big males would be like putting 10 of us guys in a room then throwing in jenna jameson... i have a feeling there would start to be some fighting!!!!!
but then what do i know
but then what do i know

Re: 400 g stock list?
With enough hiding places for The Dats it could be ok, But the Umbies grow a lot faster than the Dats. I would get the Dats a lot bigger than the Umbies if I were going that route.

Re: 400 g stock list?
I agree with bassman, Dats grow so slow you'd have to buy them like a year or so before other aggressive fish because they'd get out grown quickly..
