Super Nano Tanks
Well, here's a good example of how the Super Nano Tanks look like. This is the only glass container I have of this shape. The rest are shaped differently, but you get the general idea. Anywho, I'm fairly confident that these will be successful. I'm just further observing the super nano tanks before I start putting price tags on them. har har har.
JUST LOOK HOW SKINNY IT IS!!! They can virtually go anywheeeeeeeeeere!!!

Note to self* Madrona wood sucks. Nano-sized Manzanita wood is better. Unfortunately, none of my manzanita wood was flat enough to fit inside that glass container. Cory, gonna need your help here, supplying us with flatter nano-sized manzanita wood pieces. LOL!!

Re: Super Nano Tanks
Looks great! I had a couple of container tanks for a while; my avatar photo was taken from one of them. They were great, until I got bored

Re: Super Nano Tanks
So, does the water lettuce/other plants provide the only filtration? These are really cool, good on you for getting innovative and making your own product. My only worry would be the amount of light it can handle without getting a lot of algae on the glass, and then how do you clean it? Of course, that could be half the fun, watching the tank evolve. But some people might not like it, so if you come up with some sort of mini magnetic cleaner to incorporate, that might be cool!
Re: Super Nano Tanks
Yup - no filtration. And yes, algae is a problem - toothbrush.

Re: Super Nano Tanks
Close, it's frogbit, not dwarf water lettuce. I don't like how water lettuce roots get super branchy and fuzzy. Frogbit, although similiar, has a more basic root structure to it, and won't crowd the container as much.
I was thinking of just not lighting it at all, and just have room ambience to light up the tanks, but the one in the bathroom has an LED light strip, I think will provide adequate lighting for the frogbit. I've yet to see any algae on the containers, but yes, a toothbrush might just do the trick.

I didn't have a huge algae problem, but I did scrub the glass with a toothbrush every week or two.

Re: Super Nano Tanks
I hope I don't have to deal with that, since I want to keep the containers as maintenance free as possible. I have my fingers crossed
Re: Super Nano Tanks
Here are a couple more super nano tanks, that I'm closely monitoring. One of the round containers has the berried female. I'm excited to see that one full of cherry shrimp! The other females in the other containers have saddles, so it's just a matter of time before they become berried as well
I plan on adding more green into the tanks to help balance out the colors...without any plants, it just looks too bland. But here's what I have so far.

This is one of my favorite tanks, because it also acts as a source of ambient light. Perfect for a coffee table or corner table, or even the dining room! It's elegant look really adds to its overall effect.

Well, there you have it... these are the containers I have so far. I hope to find other unique looking containers, that I can potentially use. Wish me luck folks!

Re: Super Nano Tanks
Thank you DMD123, I actually plan on selling these eventually, once I know that everything is stable and that the shrimp are breeding and thriving. More observing for a while longer before I deem them sellable.
Re: Super Nano Tanks
I'm guessing you'll have trouble keeping the floating plants alive without decent light. Otherwise you shouldn't have much trouble as long as water changes are kept up.

Re: Super Nano Tanks
true, but since the floating plants are so easily replaced, I wouldn't mind if they ended up dying off because I'd just be able to easily replace them. Baaahahahaha
Re: Super Nano Tanks
Well then, as long as they're just for looks

Re: Super Nano Tanks
theChad: I'm unsure yet, it really all depends on which container is being used, and what else I put in it, I'd say it'll cost anywhere from $40+
Considering how much those stupid ecospheres cost ($60+ and those are for even SMALLER sizes)...so yeah I figure somewhere around $40+ would be a fair cost for these. But I want to make sure I'm doing everything correctly before I give out a right price for em.

Re: Super Nano Tanks
I don't think you'd have trouble selling them at that price. Those betta-in-a-vase folks should have been using RCS all along...

Re: Super Nano Tanks
pbmax: Very true. Bettas deserve a better home anyway! Shrimp on the other hand, would look neat in those vases. I still have another design in my head that I want to try out, once I find the right container for it.
Re: Super Nano Tanks
BillHN: Awesome, but keep in mind, nano and super nano are two different things. =P anything below a gallon, I'd say would qualify as a super nano setup. LOL.
Re: Super Nano Tanks
If I got one for the wife's office. Maybe might get her to appreciate the love for the hobby. Nah. Nvm. Just a thought. Nice nanos.PokeSephiroth wrote:Here are a couple more super nano tanks, that I'm closely monitoring. One of the round containers has the berried female. Hahahahaha, well I'm sure your wife would like one =P one made by me. Bwahahaha.

I have a couple below 1 gal, but darn, one's at a friend's house hahaha.PokeSephiroth wrote:BillHN: Awesome, but keep in mind, nano and super nano are two different things. =P anything below a gallon, I'd say would qualify as a super nano setup. LOL.
Re: Super Nano Tanks
Anything that she doesnt have to change water often and is self sustaining. Good luck in finding one besides the super shrimp eco-tank.PokeSephiroth wrote:Hahahahaha, well I'm sure your wife would like one =P one made by me. Bwahahaha.

Re: Super Nano Tanks
The only time you'd have to change water in my super nano tanks is when you have to top off the water. You don't even have to feed these shrimp because they're perfectly fine with eating the biofilm in the tank. What more could your wife want? Hahaha
Re: Super Nano Tanks
Doesnt bio flim need light to grow. Its gonna be in her office which kinda low light. But other wise that would be awesome.
Guest- Guest
Re: Super Nano Tanks
If it does, then the light in her office should be good enough. Since the tank is so skinny and shallow, it won't be a problem. hehe
Re: Super Nano Tanks
Nice looking little "tanks". I have some vases/containers that I have plant cuttings in (house plants cuttings) and they all have cherry shrimp in them. When they get siphoned out of my pleco growout tank, I dump them into the vases. They don't get much attention, but they are sill alive.

Betty: Thanks! Oh Betty, it seems like the shrimp are slowly taking over your house!
They are quite wonderful critters, they're definitely a great conversation starter, that's for sure!

Re: Super Nano Tanks
Two new styles are up and running! Not sure what I'm going to call the smaller ones, but they kinda remind me of water drops...well, sorta. Heh.

Re: Super Nano Tanks
fishNAbowl: YEAH!! Water balloons! Hah, that's perfect! I found these (and most of my glass containers) at Goodwill, I like to upcycle things, and finding things at goodwill makes this the perfect project for such things. The best part, is that the vases/glass containers are so cheap, ranging anywhere from 69 cents and up.
The two teardrop/waterballoon glass containers were only 69 cents each!
Another great thing about Goodwill, is that you never know what you're going to find. That's the only place where I've seen "oddly shaped" glass containers that make great little super nano tanks.

Dude, if you're ever in Seattle, you should check out the Goodwill near the International District... it's huge, they have enough glass containers to last you for years and yearsPokeSephiroth wrote:I found these (and most of my glass containers) at Goodwill, I like to upcycle things, and finding things at goodwill makes this the perfect project for such things. Re: Super Nano Tanks
LJ: Shoot, Seattle is just too far, I've been having lots of good luck with the goodwills I've been visiting though. They can keep their glass containers. Or, you can just copy me, like you always do. Ahem. ;-)
MorganEA: Thanks! Two people have already asked about that one! I never would've thought that the cylindrical ones were so popular.
