First attempt at DIY gel food
ok I have been putting this off for a while now.
I make snail-o for all my inverts, gelatin, baby food, calium and vedgies, blended, mixed and frozen in to cubes ( I have a recipe of any one wants it)
so I thought why not try it for my fish?!
ok so i have been saving up for this for a little while as well as had some left over stuff in the freezer
here we go!
found two types of sea weed dried not cooked.

set it in some warm water to re hydrate ..about half of each pack

now for the fun stuff!
pile of left over con feeders..who got to big to be eaten and kissed a knife and were frozen, a sunfish who died in the out door pond, scalups, chunk of salmon, filet of tilapia, some old silver sides. a few marbled cray who grew to large, and a baggie of crushed ramshorns snails, all had been frozen and thawed for this.

BLEND! ..after a few mins and some extra water it came out rather smooth.

the sea weed was fun...kinda tough at first but i tried it hole first

i ended up chopping it up in to small chunks with kitchen scissors..adding more water. It took about 3xs as long to blend as the meaty stuff...oh yeah tossed in a little peace of garlic for good measure.

next i got out a jar of baby food that i use for the snail-o..only for something to heat up and add the gelatin to with out cooking any of my ingredients....this one has the most calcium witch is why i have it for the sails.

heat for about a min...it will be HOT..add gelatin and mix until mostly lump free.

mix all together!! ( note.. always use bigger bowels than you think you will need. )

i placed it in a pan where it is about an inch deep..it is currently in the freezer covered in wax paper,

I intend to let it freeze over night, pull it out and cut into chunks that will be grated, using a cheese grater for my smaller fish....lets see how it comes out!

I threw up a little bit in my mouth - the SnailO seems to disappear so i think your on to something here. I'll try my hands with mixing up some SnailO 1st, then perhaps the little more complicated protein dish

Re: First attempt at DIY gel food
Very nice, I have a similar recipe. I go crazy on mine, adding scallops, shrimp, prawns, squid, and peas, green beans, spinach, squash, carrots, and garlic. It takes a bit of time, but it makes a lot and most of my fish love it. Also throw in some Vit C, and grind up some of my daily Vit a put in it also.
The rest of you need to attempt this, it works out real well. And very good for the fish.
The only thing that I dont do is use the gelatin. I used it on the very first batch, and none of my fish would touch it. A whole batch gone to waste.

This was just my first attempt with what i had around at the moment, If this goes over im going to try out different ingredient and such...I didn't use to much gelatin, and they already all eat the snail-o..witch is why i though to make some for them.
how does yours stay together without the gelatin?

Unfortunately without the gelatin, it doesnt hold up at all. So I cut into smaller squares so that my bigger Cichlids would eat whole and have less waste. Not sure why the gelatin soured them on it, but mine wouldnt touch it. Maybe I used to much of it.

Re: First attempt at DIY gel food
Havent done any of these homemade methods although that looks like food superior to anything store bought! I did try the Repashy meat pie last weekend and havent seen my fish nail food like that in awhile. The list of ingredients is impressive aswell, along the lines of the variety you guys are using in yours.

Re: First attempt at DIY gel food
Instead of gelatin try grounded up salad shrimp. Much better bond cause it will not lose its shape in water and the fish love it.

Re: First attempt at DIY gel food
They should love it anyway, I always add more each time. This last time is when I added the scallops and squid, and the squash and carrots.
One other thing Kaosu I use to help with the consistency of the food is that I grind up 2 cups of dried pellet food with a cup of water and add it to the mix. It helps to hold it together.

Re: First attempt at DIY gel food
so far its a big hit!
my rainbows and killifish had a feeding frenzy soon as it hit the water!
holds up just enough until they start tearing at it and it come away in chunks...now to test the other fish.
