Glass shells
I thought this was cool. Apparently the wild hermit crabs are becoming endangered because there's not enough shells on the beach. This, although a little pricey, would be a neat solution and not to mention it's cool to see the crab while it's in the shell.
You can buy the shells at glassshell.com

Re: Glass shells
Very cool!
Ive kept hermit crabs before and it is strange looking to see them out of shell. The soft pale white part of the skin thats in the shell is weird looking. Kind of cool to be able to see it through the glass.
Just looked at prices They have some for over $100!

Re: Glass shells
Nice avatar aquaman!
Some of the shells are pricey but there's a lot of reasonable priced ones. I'd certainly be willing to pay up if I was helping to conserve these fascinating guys. Kinda makes me want hermit crabs again...

Re: Glass shells
Well looks like I'll be getting hermies again. I'm going to find a home for my face eating snake Medusa first. My mother has a friend who is hard core into snakes and she's going to ask if she wants Medusa. I'll miss her but it sure is hard to enjoy her. I've got some shells that I kept over the years in the off chance I did get hermies again but when I've got some money to spend I definitely want to buy a glass shell.
And I'm excited because I will be able to put my 15gal leaky metaframe tank to use!

I wouldn't mind keeping hermit crabs again. We used to have some large ones and Wow, could they pinch!! I also used to keep Madagascar hissing cockroaches.

Re: Glass shells
Here is the deal, if any one gets hermit crabs we cannot begin any new posts titled: " I got crabs", or "check out my crabs".

Re: Glass shells
I've been doing research on hermies and boy has the information changed since I was a kid.
I found my stash of shells and have quite a few different kinds of shells. I haven't decided whether I was purple pincher crabs or Ecuadorian crabs. I'd prefer the Ecuadorians but I've read they're a little more challenging to keep. Guess it will all depend on what species I can get my hands on.
If anyone had hermie supplies for sale(I know it's a long shot, maybe your kid had one as a pet in the past and you save the supplies)hit me up.

Re: Glass shells
I took a look at some of the info out there and I never realized there were so many types available. Some of the more "exotic" types like the strawberry are pretty cool.

Re: Glass shells
Yeah I was reading up on the strawberries. They have been noted to be more delicate then other crabs. There's also blueberry crabs. Original names huh?

Re: Glass shells
I have a 55 gallon crabitat set up and I've had it for about 2 years now, contains 15 hermit crabs total, and they're doing very well
Glass Shells have been a debatable topic, because the glass shells are man-made, hermit crabs will just about use anything to cover their soft abdomens when pushed to the limit (not a good thing).
I've taken care of hermit crabs long enough to know that you should NEVER buy ones in painted shells. The cruelty they're put through is just awful. Imagine someone pulling out a hermit crab from their natural shell and forcing them into a painted shell...sometimes, the paint is still wet and ends up sticking to the hermit crab's abdomen once it dries. The hermit crab dies from poisoning from the fumes of the paint and of course, because it's stuck (it'd be like super gluing your body onto something and trying to "tear" yourself away from it... you'd leave quite a lot of skin on whatever it is that is superglued onto you. Ick)
So, that's that about painted shells. Now, the glass shells...
Sure they may look cool and whatnot, but because they're see through, it exposes their soft abdomens to light (other hermit crab keepers are convinced that the hermit crab's abdomen is sensitive to light). . . I don't know how much of this is true or not, but... yeah. It's still something I'd rather not monkey around with, if the hermit crabs are happy with natural shells. =P
Then there are other man made shells that are currently being made out of 3D Printers... now, the thought is nice, but again, much like the glass shells, it's just not meant for hermit crabs. The shells being made out of plastic (or something similar to plastic), hermit crabs with natural shells, will sometimes "chip" off part of their shell and consume it, as a source of calcium... when a crab does this to its plastic shell, well... let me tell ya, it's not going to get any calcium from it, that's for sure. hehe.
Whoops... I seem to have rambled way too much. Haha!!
Anyway, here are some pictures of my hermit crabs in their 55 gallon crabitat

Re: Glass shells
Indeed they are. I still hear them every night when their shells tap on the glass, while they're doing their crabby things. Being nocturnal creatures that they are, they're really active during dinner time, it's especially fun watching them changing shells! I've got a video of one of my hermies changing shells on my youtube page, I wish it was better quality though.
