New betta or....
I just lost my little male crowntail betta named Fan-Dancer. I had it for a number of years now so Im just going with age at this point even though Ive had them live longer. So Im at a point of having this empty 2.5 gallon tank that has heat, a hang on the back filter and no ideas. Do I get another betta? Should I try some other nano type set up?
This tank was on my list if new aqua scape/project things I was going to do. I had not expected that would include a new occupant.

Re: New betta or....
you could pick up some white cloud minnows and 2-3 shrimp the gold minnows and red shrimp look good and both stay small.

I would do H. Formosas and either Cherry shrimp or Malawa Shrimp. Even if you went with another betta this would be a good opportunity to try your hand at a planted tank.

Dario dario!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are fiesty tiny fish. No shrimp with them though... We learned that the hard way. But they have awesome color. Ours have man caves in the rock but when they see dinner they burst out very eagerly.

Re: New betta or....
Dario dario are cool but the Formosas might work better in such a small tank. They're more of a sedate swimmer. Mine live amongst my platy fry and they leave the malawa shrimp alone(Though the Malawa shrimp have a better chance at eating them). Very tiny fish but very unique and not everyone has them.

Re: New betta or....
Thanks for the ideas.
Im not into shrimp and I would just feel bad to constantly feed off all the young to my hungry cichlids
Im thinking another betta. Petsmart has some cool dragonscales on sale right now.

What about a pea puffer? You don't have to trim their beaks.

Re: New betta or....
I thought about a pea puffer but I really think it would be better for it to have at least 5 gallons.

Re: New betta or....
Do you have something special planned for the new aquascaping?
I'm getting ready to change my 2.5 around a bit, but can't come up with any good ideas. I'm going to put my dragonscale back in it.

Re: New betta or....
I am still keeping my Asian theme. Got rid of my fine white sand because it killed my Azoo palm HOB filter. Replaced it with the stuff madness uses, a course grain sand with a nice tan color, I believe called 'Lapis Lustre'. I again got a hold of an Asian calender and used one of the water color prints, this time with a darker mountain backdrop instead of a light white. I am in the middle of changing out the light fixture to an LED because the original was so bright the algae growth was horrendous. Still working on the light and searching for a new betta....

Re: New betta or....
I have a nice little LED fixture with moonlights on mine. It seems too bright for that small tank, so I'm going to switch to a fluorescent. And I'm getting ready to order one of those Azoo filters and get rid of the internal one.
Have fun picking a new betta. I chose what I thought was the saddest looking one that no one else would want and he's turned out to be a pretty fish.

I am doing a DIY approach to LED lighting.
I ordered from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I ordered three 7" bars that have 6 LED's each. They were $2.95 per bar. I thought these would not be bright enough and I was so wrong. Turns out one strip will light through my 29" tall 210g quite well. I will actually make a new dusk/dawn set up with these since the bars can be snapped in half and have three LED's per section. I will also have enough to do the 2.5g. I just need to find another transformer to finish.

Re: New betta or....
Finally found a new betta for the 2.5g. A little yellow male half moon. He started exploring the tank as soon as he got in there. I got the lighting done also. I used a 6 volt transformer instead of a 12 volt so the lighting is not as bright. I will try and get some pics up soon. Really not a huge change from the other set up.

Re: New betta or....
java moss, anubia and pennywort are amazing plants that will grow under a wt per gallon..so as long as you have light it will grow slowly
and yes red and blues are more dominate colors in bettas.
its hard to find a blue betta with out red on them..red is the most dominate color.
that is a very lovely yellow almost looks like a rose tail!! (halfmoon with lot of folds in his tail and)

Re: New betta or....
I bought crickets one time at Petsmart and I have been getting coupons regularly for them, including ones that are just 12 free with no purchase even. My fish have been eating crickets so much lately because of this. I think they are getting spoiled.

Wow, beautiful betta. I like the color and the long fins.
I have a somewhat similar ornament in my little tank -- for now. I got the Azoo filter running on the tank and was surprised how powerful it is. I had to turn it way down because it was moving the sand around so much.

Thanks Betty, Im happy with the little guy. He is starting to get comfortable in his new home and is eating like a little pig
I have been very impressed with the little Azoo filters. The last one died due to the fine sand getting sucked up in the filter and grinding away the impeller, thus the change to the little larger grain stuff.
