Anybody have Newts?
Anyone know where I can find some newts? I am looking for something other than fire bellies... I convinced the husband we should branch out to other things that live in an aquarium

I found one on the road the yesterday night! They are so cool, friend wouldnt let me take it home. But girl I could hook you up...
Re: Anybody have Newts?
haha! Yeah Ellensburg is way to dry for them to just be picked up lol. There are some really cool looking ones out there. I almost have my heart set on an Alpine Newt. The trouble comes in finding them lol. And husband is opposed to shipping costs.

Iv never kept newts but have had frogs. Ive kept Pixie and Pac Man types. I would like to get a Budgetts frog that a LFS has by me. They are adorable.

Re: Anybody have Newts?
I was just beginning research into frogs! They are pretty cute too. Unfortunately I dont have a lot of options here in town, and trying to find out anything from our pet store is useless. I definitely want something semi aquatic. Are either of those froggies active and semi aquatic? And if I choose to go the frog route any place I should check out?

The types of frogs I raised were lumps. They kind of just sat there (ambush predators). Ive never raised a Budgetts frog but they seem more active.
If you have a Petco you might be able to find a Pacman frog since they have a care sheet on them: http://www.petco.com/assets/caresheets/amphibians/pac-man-frog.pdf
The Pacman will be the most colorful of the frogs. Be aware that these types of frogs bite! Also the males will sing at night so if your bothered by the noise better not get a boy. Not sure how to sex them....

Re: Anybody have Newts?
I kind of like the idea of frog songs filling the night! Better that than our neighbors stupid parties. We are actually heading west this weekend so I will poke around some pet stores over there. The closest Petco is in Yakima, and well it really isn't too much better than the local one here in Eburg. Thank you for giving me a new idea!

Re: Anybody have Newts?
Will do... I am going to start playing with tank setup this evening. Its a little hard since I really dont know what I will get lol. But getting the basic part water part land bit done should be a good place to start. And I am going to have a look at what plants I can find at... Fred Meyer... I really hate not having decent shopping places lol.

What about african clawed frogs. Those guys get to be a decent size and are pretty meaty. They're also aquatic.

My understanding was that only the dwarf variety was legal to own in WA.Ratlova30 wrote:What about african clawed frogs. Those guys get to be a decent size and are pretty meaty. They're also aquatic.
Suriname Toad are pretty cool. Especially the fact the eggs are incubated on the females back!

Re: Anybody have Newts?
I was looking at the restricted list for amphibians... its pretty all inclusive. I guess technically even fire bellied newts AND toads should be illegal. But from a forum I visited it seems mostly its just ignored and people just get what they want anyway. People were talking about how it was actually super easy to find a lot of things in pet stores that were for sure restricted. Hermit crabs are supposed to be a restricted species toO!
