Poor firemouths have no chance against "the horde". Which is good because otherwise you would be up to your ears in babies.

There standing up to them all very well now.. they were just destracted with the process of spawning. But with a salvini in there I doubt few will survive.. sals are notourious fry eaters... it makes up a large part of there natural diet.

Congrats! I keep a breeding pair as well but need to move them to their own tank soon. Mine are in with an RTM pair so the clocks ticking. If you want to keep the smaller fish away from the fry, you can use the knitting mesh screens (plastic) zip tied to a pvc shell. The holes are smaller than egg crate and makes a good divider.

I get crap for it sometimes because they are common... but there common for a reason, by far the most colorful fish in the thorichthys genus.
@ anthraxx... yeah there's a bunch of them... I crushed some powder food for them and have been feeding zrozen brine... they seem great.

I think they are awesome fish even if they are considered "common". Right now my favorite fish has to be even more common that your firemouth. It would be my little convict in the 29g. Total monster, full of attitude, very outgoing to the point my wife had to comment about it. I named him "Spaz".fish_n_vw wrote:I get crap for it sometimes because they are common...
After the outbreak in my big tank I kind of came to a realization. I really did not miss my fancy pants wild caught fish. I missed the "common" fish that got me back into the hobby, that would be my Midas. Cant get more common than a fish that Petsmart carries.
So no crap from me about "common" fish.
