She laid eggs! He fertilized!
Well it looks like I may have a batch of angelfish babies if I can play everything right! She laid eggs today and he followed behind her, so if he wasn't shooting blanks I have fertilized eggs! I will try and post videos if it will let me. They are being attentative, especially Dad, about fanning them. I think I am going to watch them closely and see how they act during the process and see if I can let them try and raise them. So far they seem to be doing well. I am a little disappointed that they decided to lay them on the heater instead of the plant or the slate that was in the tank. And I'm hoping that the heater isn't too hot for the eggs and kills them. But I guess I will find out.

If you have another heater, install it in the tank and disconnect the one with the eggs!

Unfortunately I don't have another heater that is big enough for that tank that isn't in use by another tank.

Re: She laid eggs! He fertilized!
what is the room temp? IF you are 72-74, I bet they will do okay. I moved my adults and fry to their own 25g tank and they are doing fine at that temp range for now.
Are they in a community tank with nocturnals? If so you might want to leave a small light on near the eggs. I did that for weeks and lost very few eggs and fry to nocturnal poaching.
Good luck! Keep us all up to date!

Re: She laid eggs! He fertilized!
Room temperature is about 70. I have the heater that they are on set at 82. I have other angels that don't get along with others in a room temperature tank and they do fine as well. I'm just worried that the low temp would be too low for the eggs until they hatch. So car I only see a few eggs turning white. The others are still the clearish. She had laid almost all of the by 5:30 this evening. So far them seem to be doing okay for it being 6 hours later. Both mom and dad are fanning them off and on now. Dad was doing most of the work, maybe so mom could rest after laying all those eggs lol. I need to go tomorrow and get anti-fungus/bacteria stuff. I have heard of something called methalayne blue (not positive I know it's something Blue) I as well need to get brine shrimp so I can get that going soonish if the eggs are going to be good. I think by tomorrow afternoon I will be able to tell if I will have any survive.

I have as well turned the heater down to 80 now. The angels were not liking my hand in the tank near the eggs lol They didn't try and nip at me but both were within an inch or two of my hand. Glad they are being protective. Seem to be good parents so far lol

Here is a picture approximately 19 hours after she finished laying eggs. Not tooo many have died, still less than half. From what I have read within 24 hours they will die off if they aren't fertilized. Oh the joys of the waiting game. lol

That's pretty cool. Good luck with the babies!
Re: She laid eggs! He fertilized!
Lol Adonijah, I guess I need to urban dictionary things more! lol
And thanks Spyral, I'm hoping that I'll be able to get a few babies out of the batch. I think I may move the tanks around a bit and put the parents and babies in my bowfront, it holds at a higher temperature better and more room. There are few enough fish in the bowfront they could be put in the 20 gallon instead.

Well tonight they moved the eggs onto the slate. Got quite a few wigglers!! They are still being good parents so far! So here is a video of wiggling tails for those of you following! Enjoy.

Another update for those following. Here is a picture and video of the babies. Moved yet again lol. They have heads now and eyes. Mom and dad are bickering a little bit. But dad is doing most of the work with the babies. (one video, one picture)

(Dad below the babies, he doesn't like it when I take their picture)

Re: She laid eggs! He fertilized!
Has anyone ever had an experience with leaving the last batch of babies in with the parents when they are getting ready to lay another batch? They are starting to groom again and I can tell she's very close to laying eggs. They don't seem to be bothering the babies at all that are in there with them. Could it be a possibility that they can stay in there and the parents will be fine with them? I've heard that they will eat them in defense of the eggs. Any advice would be helpful! Thanks!
