Best way to breed and raise Angels?
From the looks of it I have finally found a pair! And I know she's holding eggs and may be a week or two away from laying. However, I did bump up the temperature of the tank a little and did a water change so it may set her off a little earlier. However, I have read and watched videos and want some more input on how to raise babies? Like if I should remove the eggs? Or leave them with the parents. And if I have to feed live brine shrimp or if I can feed freeze dried? Someone who has experience in raising Angels advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm going to try and figure out how to post a video. I got them what I believe is dancing and kissing. Way different than any aggression I have seen between angels before. Hopefully this is a good sign!!!

I have read that when they pair they will mirror each other and I believe that is what they were doing towards the end of the video.

She has seemed to pick the heater of all things to start grooming. Even though they have a wide leafed (fake) plant, a piece of slate, and then the heater. The heater is the smallest thing in there lol. He keeps grooming the slate. But I'm sure she will get the last decision lol.

Re: Best way to breed and raise Angels?
Wow..that video is indeed interesting. For me personally i have had like 5 pairs lay eggs in the past before for me but never saw any kind of behavior. Maybe they did those at night when i was sleeping. But one thing is that you might wana check them just in case one of them is being super aggressive.
So what i do is, i seperate them by putting a divider in the 55 gal i use to have. So on their side, i would just put a tall slate rock. Then they will start cleaning that slate and lay their eggs. What i would like to do is let it stay like that for 24 hrs to make sure that the eggs would be fertilized. You will know if they are fertilized (those unfertilized turns white). After 24 hrs, i remove the slate and put them in a 20 gal tank. i try to put the original water in the 20 gal.
As for the food, i gave them live brine shrimp. It is very easy to make them if you know how to. i also tried feeding them the flakes for babies. However i prefer the live brine shrimp. I watch them eat and when i feed the live brine shrimp, they seem to go crazy and eat it but when i give them the dried flakes, they almost seemed like they did not know it was food.
Hope this helps

Re: Best way to breed and raise Angels?
My female has laid about 5 or 6 times for me already but I haven't had a male to fertilize. There still is no fin nipping or any marks that I can see on either of them. So, so far so good!
How often did you feed and do water changes on the babies? There is a variety of things I have heard that needs to be done.

Re: Best way to breed and raise Angels?
hmmm i m trying to remember. well it takes about 6-8 days for them to be swmming. So during those time, i check to see if any of the eggs have gone bad and i just remove them if possible. after that, i feed them once in the morning and at evening. I change water after the evening feed (let them eat for at least 30-45min). But think i read somewher to change water after every feed.
The bottom line is, try what YOU think is needed/better. Afterall, you will learn as you go. What might work for you may not work for other and vice-versa.
BTW thats a nice looking blue angel.

Re: Best way to breed and raise Angels?
Okay, I have platy babies and seem to be doing okay with raising them so far. They get alternating crushed flakes and freeze dried brine shrimp. I have them in breeder boxes in my community tank.
I will have another tank ready. Did you use anything for bacteria? I have read that methalayne blue (I think that was the name) or hydrogen peroxide should be put in the tank to keep fungus from growing.
As well as an air stone. I have an air pump, I'd need to get an air stone but they are pretty cheap.
I got two of those blue angels from my LFS, one had like a seizure and died it was weird. All of the other fish in the tank were fine. But this one has that funky top fin. I'm not entirely sure what happened there. The other blue that died used to pick on this one when they were younger though. I just think it didn't grow back properly. However, I am unsure.

Re: Best way to breed and raise Angels?
Okay, I'm sure that my LFS will have something similar and I know they have the brine shrimp kits as well. I have read that you need to start the brine shrimp about 4 days before they are free swimming to be able to have live brine shrimp when the babies are ready to eat. Is that about the method you had to use as well?

Re: Best way to breed and raise Angels?
well...there is a simple video on you tube..search brine shrimp hatchery. all u need is 2 bottles, airpump, baking soda, brine shrimp eggs (can get them from LFS). It says you need a source of heat from a lamp but i didnt use it.
this is what i did. When i saw them babies wiggling, some swimming, thats when i did the brine shrimp. For me it took 24 hours for the brine shrimp to hatch. In the meantime, i just fed them some flakes. So when all of them were free swimming, thats whn i fed them the brine shrimp --usualy 24 hrs later.

Re: Best way to breed and raise Angels?
Okay, that's very helpful! I may be jumping the gun and getting more information than needed. Who knows if he will even fertilize the eggs since this would be his first time being a dad. Did you ever let the parents raise the babies? I have heard that some are horrible parents and some are great parents. I watched a video that was posted on here about leaving the parents in until about 2 weeks old and then removing the parents and letting the babies be.

Re: Best way to breed and raise Angels?
well, if they are first-time to new parents, they tend to eat it. But if they hae been parenting for some time, they are good.
And no i never let the parent hatch the baby. just my preference

Re: Best way to breed and raise Angels?
That was the first one I have watched and gone back to a few times! It is VERY informative. I just know that there are many ways of doing things. I'm not sure how well mine would do on raising them though. I may let them try their first batch and if it doesn't work, pull their second. Did you watch the video of my angels? Is that normal behavior?

Re: Best way to breed and raise Angels?
Yes that is the 2 males. Battling for the alpha spot.. Like I said in the other post I would separate them into there own tanks. 20 highs have worked the best for me.
Re: Best way to breed and raise Angels?
The two in the video are the "pair", female is the koi, for sure female she has laid 5 batches of eggs for me already.
