Cold-Water?
So looking around at stuff cause im bored and have noticed that a Cold-Water tank based on PNW isn't common... only reason I've found that is a common problem is Cooling... anyone have any ideas?? this has perked my attention and I wanna try it but i wanna get some input on why i should or shouldn't.
Re: Cold-Water?
think you need a chiller like you have for some of the saltwater stuff.... also hit up the fish hatchery's i had a tank of salmon we raised at school once from eggs to like 120 days then they took them and released them

i was thinkin small scale no salmon... like inverts and small sculpins(if there is such thing) and such.. notin too big..
Re: Cold-Water?
lol oh sorry you might be able to do it with like an air condenser unit with copper tubing running though the tank or something similar

Re: Cold-Water?
everywhere ive read says dont let the copper touch the salt water its very back and poisonious >.>
ive read about DIY chillers from mini bar fridges... but idk how well it will work or how to keep it from corroding >.>

Re: Cold-Water?
you may need to switch the parts over to like stainless....
or another idea you could put in a box in the tank that is sealed from the tank that has the copper in it.... you know what i mean? but it will transfer the temp through conductance... kinda like floating the bottled hot water to rise the tanks temp

Re: Cold-Water?
Such as he states??kcress AquariaCentral.com wrote:In your case I'd suggest you put your evap coil into a small insulated tank, one you could make out of acrylic and insulate. Run tubing out of this little tank and into your fish tank. Use a little circulating pump, it can be a powerhead even. Fill this tank and the hose with propylene glycol. This is an edible liquid with a very low freezing point. It won't freeze around your evaporator tubing. This setup will isolate your evaporator coil from the saltwater without plastic bags.
Re: Cold-Water?
yes sounds about right but i would do glass as the plastic would insulate more then conduct the temp.....ie a cooler keeps it in

Re: Cold-Water?
so go Acrylic Front with Wooden sides(for insulation) and then the Chiller is made with a Glass box with tht liquid to allow for it to diffuse the heat(or as it is lack of heat) out to the tank.. have a powerhead or something causing water flow over it??
Re: Cold-Water?
I was lookin at doing a cold water marine tank a while back when we lived near a beach with thousands of cold water anemones, AMAZING colors, tthe chillers I found were in the hundreds to thousands of dollars, but there is one out there that goes for 100$
or you could just get 9 of these bad boys!

But this is the cheapest one you will probably find if you dont want to make one, still over a 100$:
