Re: HBH Super Soft Food
I like HBH food. They are also the makers of the "Top Fin" (Petsmart) Spirulina Pellets and Super Soft Krill Pellets. I have used both for my fish without issues. My fav is African Cichlid attack; except Petsmart/Petco stop carrying it.
If you want spirulina, try NutraFin-MAX Spirulina Flakes ! I bought some a few weeks back, and is the best spirulina flakes I've used so far ( 40% spirulina, also has a good amount of garlic, you can smell it).
ALSO, another good spirulina source is Ocean Nutrition Cichlid Pellets and Marine Pellets (i use both). This is the current feed my fish get. You can only get the Cichlid Pellets online, but the Marine Formula-I and II pellets can be found at Petco. Very high amounts of spirulina algae.
Ocean nutrition is FAR superior to New Life Spectrum and half the price
(Try the Formula-I pellets from Petco, your fish will go crazy for them!)

I bought $40s of NLS (large pellets). NLS is good food (superior to Hikari), but there's a lot of hype.

Re: HBH Super Soft Food
I went through pretty much every food out there in the last 3 years. I have yet to find anything as good as NLS. I gave away a TON of HBH food about a month back. My fish wouldn't eat it after they were on NLS.
Re: HBH Super Soft Food
I've also tried many different brands and am sticking with the NLS, I've been using it for over 5 years now. I found the HBH pictured above to be very messy and ended up tossing it.

It's funny you should ask this question! I started using it a week ago. Last night i fed all my fish and a few hours later i was looking at all of them and the Rustys guts sure blew up! They looked awfully bloated...I hope their still alive when I get home!?

Re: HBH Super Soft Food
Yep exact same thing happen to me couple days ago with my one rusty I thought she was pregnant because her gut was big like that, but by the next day its back almost back down to normal. After you said this Ive even seen my big featherfin with a big gut a couple times thinking it was pregnant, seems there is something in the food thats causing this.

Re: HBH Super Soft Food
They do but im not going to be using any of mine anymore, I have now 2 big plastic containers of mixed Hikari excel and gold floating pellets in both baby and small size that I cant use either. Now adding these super soft spirulina and krill I wont use.

I use both of those, and I haven't had any problems with them
my fish eat right away none of the pellets make it to the floor of the tank

Re: HBH Super Soft Food
If the fish are bloating up with big bellies after eating the HBH or any other brand of food, it's possible that they are just overeating. I've had fish that do that -- even though I wasn't feeding too much, they were still voracious eaters and would get more than their fair share!
With NLS, I feed what the fish can eat in about 30 seconds.

Stierwalt3, even though it's more cost effective to buy the 5 lb. bucket, I would suggest buying a small container first, to make sure that you and your fish like it. If you were closer, I'd give you a little bit to try!

Ive lost so far 2 duboisi's and thinking 5 chimba's now to this food. Vince uses the dianichi baby pellet and hbh flake for his trophs.

Re: HBH Super Soft Food
yeah, I use dianichi baby pellets... hbh vege flake.... and super soft on my trophs.... havent had a problem... My bloat epidemic was because of bloodworms... my sister admitted she fed them it cause the other fish in the house liked it so much... she wanted to treat them....
But havent lost any since then.... all doin great.... but only have 30 in a 120 5ft tank.... So they gots lotsa room!

Re: HBH Super Soft Food
Addicted, have you looked into other possible causes for the deaths?
I didn't like using the food because the fish made such a mess eating it, but it didn't cause them to get sick or die. I wouldn't want to blame the food unless it were way over its expiration date or possibly overfeeding.
Hope you get it figured out and don't lose anymore.

Re: HBH Super Soft Food
I really dont think its the food also, after my first encounter of bloat I made sure to only feed them spirulina, stayed feeding them up till 2 weeks ago HBH spirulina flake in the morning and super soft spirulina in the evening and would fast them on the weekend. Ive had the chimba's in the same 55 gal. for the whole 2 months ive had them and they have ate so well but really it doesnt seem they have put on harly any size compared to my duboisi's. Nothing has changed as far as increase or decrease in filtration I generally try to keep 1 tablespoon per 5 gal of water of aquarium salt in the tank and thats it for additives. Im on well water so I dont need dechlorinator, I use to use prime up till maybe 1.5 to 2 months, that might be one of the reasons.
So 2 days ago I dosed my tank after a WC with 1 tablespoon of epsom salt per 5 gal of water, then this morning did another good WC after moving rocks and fake plants and ended up finding another 4 for a total of 8 dead chimba's. So after WC I dosed again the difference of epsom salt taken out with WC.

Re: HBH Super Soft Food
I'm curious why you add the tablespoon/5 gallons of aquarium salt to the tank? That seems like a lot of salt unless you are treating an illness.
