Acclimating your corals and fish

Since there is some new interest in the SW section, I figured I would post up how I acclimate my corals and fish before I add them to my tank.

I am addicted to corals, I have bought a lot of them in the past few weeks and have had to acclimate them before adding them to my tank.

This is my method, it may not be what you do but it works for me.

1) Remove coral or fish from shipping container, put them in the "dip & pour" container along with a few inches of the water they were bagged with.
2) Add about 1" of my tank water to the dip & pour.
3) Let sit for 5 minutes, add another 1" of my tank water.
4) Let sit for another 5 minutes, add another 1" of my tank water.
5) Remove coral by hand and place in my tank
6) Quickly net the fish and place in my tank

This has worked well and I have not damaged any of my coals and all my fish have survived.

I use the drip method on my fish. Similar to this process.

Corals I acclimate over a period of about a half hour. While floating a container with coral and water it came in, in a container in my tank to bring the water tempurature to the same as the tank and then adding small amounts of tank water to the container every few minutes. Take some water out and discard and add a little more tank water every few minutes. After a half hour or so I do a coral RX dip to kill any pests that may be on it so not to introduce pests to my tank, rinse them in a seperate container of tank water and then place them in the tank.
