**FREE Presentation -- Native American Fishes: Kat Hentsch** - Presented by GSAS

The Greater Seattle Aquarium Society (GSAS) is pleased to sponsor a free presentation about native American fishes by one of our own GSAS members, Kat Hentsch.

The talk is titled "Native Fish of the US: Ohio/Mississippi River Basins and Great Lakes Ecosystems". Explore the realm of Midwestern native fish suitable for aquaria with species profiles and compatibility. Learn the different habitats and explore collection sites as Kat brings you to her secret spots for the best specimens.

The presentation will be Tuesday, February 11th, 2014 at 7:30PM at Seattle Pacific University; Otto Miller Hall; Room 109; West Nickerson Street and 3rd Avenue West

Doors will open about 6:30 PM for a 'social hour'; the meeting will start at about 7:30 PM

The lecture will be followed by a short auction

Guests are welcome; no entrance fee

Family friendly but no childcare provided

Just a reminder that this presentation on native American fishes is next Tuesday.  After the presentation, included in the monthly auction, will be some species offered that you typically don't find available.

Species: (currently acclimated to ~60F but I will be raising that slowly over
the weekend to 70-74F; all can live in normal tank temps or lower)

Banded Pygmy Sunfish, Elassoma zonatum
Everglades Pygmy Sunfish, Elassoma evergladei

(both stay VERY small, max ~1")

Speckled Madtom, Noturus leptacanthus
(max 4", like other cats will swallow anything that fits but otherwise
peaceful)

Eastern Mudminnow, Umbra pygmaea
(max 2", snail-eater!)

Central Longear Sunfish, Lepomis megalotis megalotis
(best suited for a large S.A. Cichlid type tank, max 9")

Orangethroat Darter, Etheostoma spectabile
(will eat smaller fish but otherwise well suited for community tanks, max 3")

Yellowfin Shiner, Notropis lutipinnis
(schooling community fish but may outcompete slower tankmates for food,
similar to denisonii barb; max 3")

What a cool meeting that was! I was excited about getting home with some awesome new native fish... but what blew me away was how awesome the $1 books I bought were. I have nothing but respect for fish keepers in the 70's! Air powered HOB filters? These need to make a comeback!
