Re: LJ's 15 column shrimp tank
That's pretty awesome. More pictures LamentalJester! MoOOOOREEE!!!
Unless, of course... you don't WANT to give in.
My 15 gallon tank is at the point where I need to start trimming the sunset hygro. I wish I could put more plants in though!
So wait, what ever happened to our little contest?

Re: LJ's 15 column shrimp tank
I think we should start a whole new post with pictures of each of your tanks and then do a vote as to which one fishbox members think is the best. Winner would then have bragging rights.

Re: LJ's 15 column shrimp tank
Lol, more pictures will come soon. My order of phoenix moss is coming in today, and I'll be getting shrimp next weekend. As for the contest, once I get my shrimp, I'm game. Obviously my tank is so amazing and glorious that god is magically creating babies in there... where are YOUR magic holy babies poke?

But wait, I thought you were going to get blue velvets, or some sort of blue colored shrimp?

Re: LJ's 15 column shrimp tank
Changed my mind for a few reasons: This being my first time doing shrimp, I decided to start with cherries; BillHN's friend Tanya (the one that sold me the shrimp) I don't think had enough blue velvets yet to sell; and lastly I got an awesome deal for the cherries, 70 for $20.
I still wanna do blue velvets sometime, and I've still got room in my apartment for more tanks! I just setup my 20 long along my window for growing out plant trimmings from my 75. The stand is a double shelf, so I can put something below as well, probably do a 6.6 long ("bookshelf") and a 2.5 gallon if it'll all fit. I also got a 20 reg with stand from fishbox member MarineLand yesterday.... soooooo, plenty of opportunies to do velvets

Re: LJ's 15 column shrimp tank
Indeed. Mine are breeding in the unheated, unfiltered, nearly opaque green (oopsie...) 2.5g Walstad on my window sill. For the longest time the shrimplets didn't survive, but now they are

Re: LJ's 15 column shrimp tank
And congrats! Cherries are great Low maintenance and easy to keep happy. Now you need some nettle leaves... They don't pollute the water and shrimp devour them.

Nettle leafs? Like stinging nettle? I can find that at grocery stores in the tea section?

Re: LJ's 15 column shrimp tank
Yup, stinging nettles. I recommend shorts, t-shirt, and a gas trimmer for harvesting (wear your safety glasses, but leave the gloves off for best results).
I need to go harvest another batch... before the county comes out and mows the edge of the woods across the street. I have a decent number in the wooded area of my back yard too.

Re: LJ's 15 column shrimp tank
Nettle leaves and mosura excel are the only things I feed my 3g m. minuta-carpeted 3g RCS tank. Anything else causes a green water explosion.
Supposedly they're quite nutritious for people too. I recommend consumption without boiling first of course.

Re: LJ's 15 column shrimp tank
So is the neetle leaves sold as tea alright to use for the shrimp? (I live in the middle of the city, not a lot of nettle growing around me)
Consumption eh? I heard it was a good exfoliant... go ahead, give it a try, rub it all over

Re: LJ's 15 column shrimp tank
I have no idea about the tea. I've only harvested them myself - I pick the leaves off and set them to dry - usually takes a couple of days. Once dry they go into a bag and are kept in a dry place.
It seems to me you should fix that whole city problem of yours.

Re: LJ's 15 column shrimp tank
I would think that the tea version has caffeine in it, so it might not be suitable for shrimp. Best thing to do is to just get it in the wild.. or order some from Gigi, from Vashon Island (they're also the ones that make the black bamboo shrimp hotel thingies.)

I have 60+ acres of the stuff across the street from me
1oz for $5 huh? I wonder how many dried leaves it would take to hit 1oz.

Well, considering almost ALL the place-to-be LFS's in WA are within 20 min driving distance from me, I don't consider it a problem Although, I do miss Clarks up in Bham

All well and good, except it's clearly RC aircraft season now, so your silly little LFSs need not apply.

Well sure, but my wife frowns on 400-size multirotors hovering in the house...
I have scared the fish and shrimp with some of my smaller multirotors

Ha, I'd probably frown too!
Anyways, concerning nettles, I just realized I have some of the Gigi's Wonderfood, which has dried nettle in it along with some other goodies. Aquarium Co-Op (which is only a 15-20 minute drive ) carries it too, so I guess I'll just use that

Thanks guys... Poke, if you didn't like the look (or maintenance) of the riccia for [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], I suggest trying the phoenix moss. It's sooooo perfect for branches; grows with the wood, compact, very easy to maintain, and beautiful up close.
Pretty soon I'll start posting videos of this tank as well as the others as soon as I get familiar with video editing, so stay tuned! Until then, here's Picard, Riker, and Data enjoying a night on the town:

Re: LJ's 15 column shrimp tank
Yeah, I was thinking of using phoenix moss and ordering online is not an option for me. hehe... some day
I did manage to sell most of my riccia, I kept a couple, just to have some for myself, and tied them down to some rocks, and those are growing out pretty nicely. But yes...definitely phoenix moss for my driftwood. THE FUTURE AWAITS!

Re: LJ's 15 column shrimp tank
Yeah, I'm using riccia meshed to rocks in bookcase tank too, I think it looks more natural that way rather than being tied to branches
why no online ordering? I got most of my phoenix off of ebay... I think I gave you the seller's name a while back ago.
You should post an up-to-date pic or video of your 15, I wanna see

Re: LJ's 15 column shrimp tank
m'kay. You asked for a photo or video, here's the most up-to-date video of my 15 gallon tank. Footage was taken last night, and edited this morning. Here's video No.3 hehe
Re: LJ's 15 column shrimp tank
Looks good Poke! Lots of fisheys swiming around, I see you added some Rams in there, love those fish. How's the shrimp population doing in there? I only saw one shrimpy in the vid. I gotta find some good video editing software
PS- Sorry for the late reply, but I was gone all weekend camping:

lol my thoughts exactly, on behalf of the both me and Lamental Jester, we thank you, PlantedAquariumSeattle
As for the shrimp... well, ever since I added the mating pair of Rams, the shrimp population has drastically decreased (which is okay. It's basically free live food for the rams, which I can replenish by adding more shrimp from my other tanks... the ciiiiiiiiiircle of liiiiife) It was weird though, because I had thought that the male would be the more aggressive one, but turns out it was the female that was picking off the shrimp population. And boy, she was determined to get that sucker down! [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
