Schooling Neon Tetras -UPDATE-

Post  PokeSephiroth on 2013-11-27, 20:51

I'm guessing my neon tetras are still destressing, because they're swimming like this, ever since I re-scaped my 55. It's still pretty cool to watch though :DThey kinda look like they're secret agents, swimming side-ways like that. Hahaha...they're on a mission!

I re-introduced my harlequin and espei rasboras into the tank (not in the video), and it's great seeing them swim mid-level, while the neon tetras are swimming towards the bottom. Smile

There are 5 Rummynose Tetras that I got from fishNAbowl, which I've kept in the 100 gallon and then moved to the 8foot breeder tanks, and they didn't look so happy...so I moved them into the 55 gallon. I figure, I should just move them to the 36 gallon, where the other Rummynose tetras are, but...meh.

I've also got 5 Ghost Catfish in there, they aren't really swimming together, but whatever. =P I do plan on adding more ghost catfish when they become available.

Enjoy!

I think they will loosen up after they get used to the new environment. Looks great though Poke, like it!

fishNAbowl: Yeah, I'mpretty sure they will re-adjust once they're accustomed to their surroundings. Very Happy

After adding back the Harlequin Rasboras, I'm hoping they will act as dither fish for the neons. Very Happy

Is this more current than they had before? They seem to be struggling a bit. By the looks of the plant movement it's pretty strong by neon standards. Beautiful tank!

plaamoo: Nope, they've been in there before with the same water currents. The tank may...be a bit too over filtered, it's got two Marineland Penguin 350 HOB filters, a fluval 304 canister filter, and a penn plax cascade 1000 canister filter.

.... I spose I could take a couple filters out... but......... but but but... LOL

So........ after plaamoo's post about having *too much* water current in my tank, I decided to turn off all my filters. Lo and behold, the neons are swimming EVERYWHERE NOW... You were right plaamoo, now I just have to figure out how to reduce the flow of the filters.

canister filters shouldn't be too hard, since they have those flow valve things... and I guess for the HOB filters, I could use some sort of baffle system, which is a bit trickier to install on these Marineland Penguin 350's...

They look so much better now Very Happy

That sure is a pretty tank Angelo. I love the large groups of small fish. Very peaceful ... such a feeling of gentleness. Big fish in a tank just don't look like that.

Much better! I'm all for over-filtering, and have 2 filters on each of my tanks, but 4! Very Happy
I would think 1 canister + 1 HOB would be good. Or 2 canisters. Spraybars help disperse the outflow and move surface water for oxygenation. It is a beautiful tank and what you're doing is obviously working for the plants. Experiment with the different filters and see what works.

Thanks, cichlid-gal! I really do love the sight of small fish schooling together, I think that's what a lot of people enjoy watching, when it comes to having small fish in a large tank. I'm just surprised I've never had them do that before. They usually just kinda... disperse themselves all over the tank, and not really "school" together. But now they are. Maybe it's because they're still getting used to their surroundings. Hehe.

I definitely owe ya one, plaamoo, weakening the filters definitely helped a lot! I do plan on making a spraybar for hte canister filters, that way I'm not decreasing water flow, per se, and just redirecting it more towards the surface. Very Happy
