PostSubject: Please Help! Reverse Osmosis   Mon May 31, 2010 11:05 pm

    Hi,

Basically I need an RO unit because my well water is just off-colored and nasty. It is very high in iron and CO2 which makes the pH fluctuate drastically. I have done a fair amount of research on them but still don’t know what make and model would be best. If you have experience with using Reverse Osmosis I would greatly appreciate any advice. Also I was wondering if RO water will still be ok to use for a planted tank? From what I have read it strips the water of all the trace elements that plants need to live. Another question I have is can the trace elements be effectively put back for not much money?

    Thanks,

    Kevin

Just in case your still looking for an RO unit, these guys are very good. Contact them for any help and setting up a system. You can add aquarium salts too to replace trace minerals

As far as the ph flucuation goes. Test your water, after it's been out of your tap for two days. All the co2 should have gassed off to give you a good ready.

Then I'd also get say a 55 gallon plastic barrel, to store the tap water in. and run a simple filter in it, with carbon and purigen. This will be much less expensive, and easier to deal with that an R/O unit. 99% of the time, tap water is suitable for a planted tank.

Thanks for the help Cory! Basically I have came to the same conclusion. Although I do need to find some sort of system to filter the water. How would you go about setting something like that up? Is their a filter you would recommend?

I have tested my pH after a week of sitting in a 36gal plastic barrel several times. It ends up reading somewhere between 7.0 to 7.2. Also for some reason the pH in my tank is still high. It’s around 7.6 - 7.8. I think it might be from the “river rock” I bought at my LFS. The rocks were in my tank for almost a year. But once I found out that certain rocks raise your pH levels, I threw them out.

Rocks like marble and limestone are calcareous and will raise your pH.

I believe the "river rock" that is being sold in those mesh bags at the chain stores is marble. Or at least it's calcareous. If you pour hydrochloric acid on a rock and it fizzes its calcareous, and will raise your pH.

Also Sand, I'm just using regular old store bought aquarium gravel.

LOL! Didn’t you read my introduction? Of course my tank is set up. It's been up and running for a year now. Currently I have a thriving peaceful community and they have even spawned.

Are you referring to me converting it into a planted tank? Because I wont be getting my new versa-tops to accommodate my twin-tube light until Thursday. And that’s even if they can get it. Then I will place an order for my plants. I will use this week to do extra research, and with the help of Cory and SA, hopefully I wont epically fail! Very Happy
