if i went down to the beach, got a piece of driftwood, and left it to dry in the sun and then soaked it in freshwater (not tank) for about a week, would it make it safe to use? thnx for looking.

Your best bet is to Boil it some how. I've seen people boil drift wood in a huge tub over an open fire!

The idea is to get rid of any parasites. If you bake it might catch on fire! Do your parents use chlorine in the hot tub...that wouldn't be to good either.

..if there is only chlorine in the hot tub is say go for it soak it as hot as you can for a few hours (though it might leach in to the water and make it brown)
take it out and soak it in fresh water with dechlorinater , changing the water every day to fresh for a few days and i think youll be fine.
OR just put it in a tub, fill it with as hot as water as you can as often as you can for a few days, let fully dry, re soak to sink and go for it!....its what i do with all of mine.

mind you when you fill your bath tub with hot water... boil a couple pots as big as you have and dump that in as well once its to a full boil that will raise up the temperature of the tub beyond what would come out at the tap... Do it a couple times in a row if you wanted if you have that much water in the tub or if the pots are preatty small..

Just beware the chlorine in a hot tub is way more concentrated than what comes out of the tap.

Regular driftwood will slowly bread down in you fish tank... Its alot better to use one of the imported woods that sinks right away and is really resistant to decomposing

It will last quite a long time really... you would end up getting tired of the piece befor it rotted away.. lol.. its just after a while it will slowly form a soft outter layer.. SO if you wanted to use it i would take it out of your tank every once in a while i would rub this layer off outside under a hose or in the shower.. This will keep the wood from making a mess of the tank and substrate.. Plecos will help with that as well

Re: hey quick q please give opinion
I guess I'm going to diagree ( on the rotting ), boiling would definately work.
I personally, took one off the beach, and put it in my fresh water tank, nothing bad happened, (stayed in that tank for 5+ years) that was 30+ years ago and it's been in my SW tank now for 5 years
Once under water there is little oxygen, so rotting stops. Just my .02

Re: hey quick q please give opinion
you put it into your saltwater tank?? why did you do that.. In your display or sump??
Another word of caution be carefull on where the driftwood was collected..
All driftwood i have collected war in port angeles bay which boats and what not travel all the time and water runs off from city streets and what not..
Wood is a sponge and will soak in all the water it can untill in sinks...
I have had a piece that was filled with oily water and it took a couple day for that oil to seep out...
Was not a nice sight...
I couldnt imagine that happening to a salwater tank...
Atleast thats a good thing having it in a freshwater tank for 5years.

Re: hey quick q please give opinion
It's in my DT, originally visible as of now only partially.
For SW tanks it's amazing how little of an amount of living vreatures have attached to this as opposed to the rocks.
Good point on where you collect it, I got mine off Strech Island in the sound, less contaminates, and remember this was 30 years ago
Once you have boiled it or pour boiling water over it, put it in a 5 gallon bucket for a few days (with water) to see if anything starts leaching out.
You could also take PH, amm, nitrite and nitrate readings of the water before putting it in the bucket and a couple of days later to be safe
