new festae Empty new festae

Post  rattle1972 2010-08-12, 12:25

well i went to pet pourri in everett on tuesday and picked up this festae. they labled it a female. and also talked to a friend that knows the fish
and he is convinced it is a female also. but everything in me tells me its a male. maybe its just wishfull thinking. the fish is very stressed out.
they said he had been chewed on by a pike cichlid. came home put him in with my females and they went nuts over him. never seen my females
color up so much. he seemed to be already paring up with one. but last night i pulled him out and put him in a 30 gal to treat him for fin rot. so its hard to say what he is yet. but here are some pics.

Yea i saw this guy too, almost picked him up but i was just to lazy to treat him. I'm pretty sure its male, even the dude that worked there said it was.

Good luck with the baby making, I'm very interested in fry!

Your right! It's a male!

I had a W/C 7 inch FEMALE festae. Females do not have iridescence spots on their body; only males do.

Nice find! Find a female and start breeding em. I'll buy a couple fry!

actually. everything i have understood to be true with sexing cichlasoma festae has come back not necessarily true. at first i was under the impression that no female will have blue spangleing in the tail. then i found some females that did. then the black dorsal. well the other day i found a picture of a pair that spawned on monster fish keepers, and the male had a black dorsal.

i got this one as a male, then turned out to be female...[img][You must be registered and logged in to see this link.][/img]

but seeing how this one has blue spangleing in the tail and dorsal and body, and no black dorsal yet! and the interaction with my females. i am pretty sure its a male... time will tell!

I have to agree, looks male to me, look at the spangling and the greenish color on the face.
